alter designs?

I was wondering if I can alter the free designs or the designs on the cards I purchased? I would like to use just the outline on a few of the designs like redwork. These are for personal use. Thanks much.

You can do whatever you want, but it may or may not be legal. The designs I give away specifically state that you can pretty much do whatever you want with them with two exceptions. You can't turn around and sell them to someone else, and you can't give them away without telling people where you got them.

I don't sell designs though. I see that many license agreements allow you to sew things on anything you want, to give or to sell, but you can't modify the design in any way. But I am not sure how it would be interpreted if you just didn't sew the whole thing. You didn't really modify anything, you just didn't use the whole thing.

That's probably a grey area if that's how the license reads. I know in the original documentation on my PE-200 it specifically addresses that the UFS copyright symbol is part of the design and must be sewn if it appears on the design.

It couldn't hurt to write the owner of the design and ask them. If someone were to ask me about that, I would go in and edit the design for them, and have only the outline. Others might not do that, but I would be pleased someone was even looking at my designs.
