Brother PE 150V--Yay! I got it!

Well, I finally bought the machine....$350 at Walmart. With it $299 on ebay, then having to pay for shipping, then wonder if it will be okay getting here, I decided to go locally.

I would like to thank Amante, Bob, Beowulf, and Melissa for the input. Everyone was right! It is sooooo simple! (and addicting ;) ) I kept trying to find the foot pedal, because I kept thinking it's a sewing machine. I have placed a bid on Ebay for a card of floral designs and am anxiously awaiting that. I am looking for a reasonable Amazing Box; Walmart has them for about $200 and I don't want to go quite that high, yet.

I do have a few questions, though.

  1. Why should I use rayon thread? Is this because it creates less "fuzzies" and I won't have to clean the machine as often? I found some mercerized cotton thread, size 50, at a yard sale and was wondering if this would work okay.

  1. I would like to embroider a line at the bottom of the design I choose. I understand I would need to use a frame, but any tips on how/where to start and stop the machine so it doesn't embroider up the sides?

  2. Does anyone feel the same as I do about the bobbin "door"? I don't like it as I am afraid one of the tabs, especially the left side, will break and the machine won't run. Would this be true? Has this happened to anyone and if so, do you have a source for a new "door"?

  1. When I put the machine away, I make the needle go down, like I would if I were putting a sewing machine away. Is this okay?

Oh boy, oh boy. I love it. When I think of all the fun I'll have---Thanks so much everyone!

Hi Beth, The question about the type of thread you use is a personal choice. Polyester is more durable in the wash, you can bleach and it will not fade. Rayon is shinier, but I can't see much of a difference. As to cleaning the machine, I clean it every other bobbin. There is not that much lint but I like to keep it oiled and humming along. I have a Bernina 200 and a Deco 650. After a while you will hear when the machine is dirty. Just remember to change the needles often and use the right ones for the right fabrics (ballpoint for knits and sharps for weaves). Use the best stabilizers you can afford and don't skimp in this area. Your desgins will stitch our beautifully if you take the time a prepare your canvas. Lots of Luck, Nana

Hi, Beth, thought I'd share my 2cents worth, too.

I have used, until recently, only thread designed for embroidery machines. I was under the impression is was better for the machine. However, I recently had a situation, where I really didn't want shiny thread. With a little experimenting, I found I could use, and it looked really great, Valdani Cotton-Look Polyester. Because it's a polyester, it doesn't have the lint like the cotton thread - on the other hand, it looks just like cotton. And it was the effect I needed for a particular applique. On the other hand, I had to reduce the thread density a lot (from .4 to, I think it was .8), use a different needle and stabilize more, to accomodate the thicker thread.

All in all, I was able to create my Sunbonnet Lady with a more pleasing appearance.

I had a PE150 before I upgraded to my 8500D ... but I seem to recall you can use your built in lettering to accomplish this (or get very close).

Use the underscore "_", one after the other, until you have filled the allowed memory field. I would probably try with the "large" letters and adjust down if needed. Save to one of the memory positions.

Then, go to the layout mode and recall from memory, what you saved above, and adjust it to be in the location wanted, enlarging or reducing as needed to make it fit what you want.

You might also want to experiment with the hyphen "-", also, and try the 3 different lettering sizes to see which produces the effect closest to what you are seeking.

I hope that made some sense ...

I agree. In fact, when the machine comes to a stop, it stops in the upright position, suggesting to me that is it's storage position.

Also, on my 8500D, wants the needle in the upright position before it will go to "embroidery arm storage" position.

Good luck and have lots of fun!
