Digitizing help

Hi all. I need help learning to digitize my own designs. I am new to embroidery. I bought the Brother ult 2003 and PE design a few months ago and love it so far, but have only been able to use bought designs.

The instruction manual for PE design isn't the greatest. I guess what I need is a good step by step guide on how to convert say clip art into an embroidery design. I have thus far been unsuccesful attempting to create my own designs.

Any suggestions. I know there is a huge debate about the merits of PE design. If there is an easier, auto digitizing software that isn't too expensive let me know!

TIA for helping. Amy

Hi, Pat. Yeah I guess lessons are probably in order! I was hoping for a do it yourself program that I could work on at night after the kids are in bed! Amy

I also find that the manual for PE Design is not very helpful, especially considering the price of the software! What I have found VERY useful are the tutorials from Carol Price and Loes van der Heijden. They are on CD's. I bought both of them on-line. They might seem a bit pricey, but I really feel they're worth the money. There are no lessons given anywhere around here, and these are step-by-step instruction. Also, I can watch segments over and over again (it takes me awhile to 'get it' sometimes!) and have the lessons anytime I want. I don't know which I would choose if I were only buying one - they're both excellent.

I use PED 5 but am hopeless at telling other people how to use it although I have taught a friend in my own home and we had fun writing sayings yesterday with the alphabets. Loes CD book is recommended by a lot of people on other groups. Edna

Thank you Teacher and Edna. I will look for both of those. Classes are hard to come by in my area as well.

Try the Janome website. They have a section called "Exercises and Lessons." Their Digitizer 10000 embroidery software is similar to the PE5 enough so that you can get a feel for the Brother software. Their site has pull-down menus with numbered lessons and various info that can assist you. I have both Janome's and Brother's PE5 programs and alternate between them. The Brother software seems to run faster than Janome's program. It's not too hard once you get the hang of it and study how the machine stitches it out. It does take some time to fine tune the stitch-out though.

The price looks reasonableenough. I really just wanted to learn techniques for digitizing realisticlooking fur and feathers though. Several tutorials available for this butnone for the Brother PE Design software that I can find.

Jenny's Sewing Studio has some interesting-sounding DVD's from Art-Sew-Perfect. One of them deals specifically with digitizing realistic-looking animals. I think I'll ask for it for Christmas. It's $59.95 US and when I asked about shipping to Canada, the reply was that it's $9 for international priority and there's a handling charge. Not too bad. I wonder if anyone has used these tutorials?
