No reason why not (as long as they aren't the elasticized - or elasticised - kind).

Of course, what we call rubber bands are called elastics in the UK, I think.

PS - For people on the American side of the pond: UK: Braces US: Suspenders

And a question: In the US, these are called "braces" { } and these are "brackets" [ ]

What are they called in the UK?

I had the same sort of question the other week. I had to embroider on luggage straps. What I did was actually hoop the strap after using the template to position the design. I used a LEATHER needle as the straps were very thick. all the time the machine was embroidering I lightly HELD the hoop so it didnt "pop" out. It worked perfectly. Just make sure you use the stronger needle. MG
