Glass is obsolete today . . . . . . . .

We have plastics, they don't break so easily and are much harder and better than glass.

Glass is oldfashioned and nobody needs it anymore!

This cretin has taken the time to post similar negative threads on dozens of NG's. What kind of person does this? A 12 year old with no friends?

No, not yet. No plastic can have the beauty of stained glass or even retain color like glass. Plastics ALL fog under long duration exposure to ultra violet light, some may take longer than others but none has withstood the test of time like glass. And, I don't know of ANY plastic that can take the heat of a soldering iron, let alone other high-heat uses of glass. (Imagine a plastic window to your oven. Imagine cleaning up a mess on the floor when said plastic melts.)

And, as someone else has pointed out, fiber optic cables are made of glass. Special ultra-high purity glass, for that matter. And with different indices of refraction in the same strand -- in such a controlled manner that plastic just can't compete. AND plastic just cannot obtain that kind of clarity that is needed for a fiber up to hundreds of miles long!

Glass obsolete? Not for a VERY long time.

You troll.

HERE IS GREAT KICK IN THE ASS!!

I did the Cocoa Florida show (I am fused glass) and got second prize in the glass category, first went to a guy doing plastics that looked like glass.

all glass artists went ballistic. ya know what the lame judge said, well its a type of glass, Plexiglas.

I have never done that show again..

When I used to be insecure enough in my "craft" (about 24 years ago) and was enamored with the idea of "JURIED SHOWS" or asked to submit slides, photos and or credentials to a panel, and in some cases money, I would hope that my work was acceptable.......Although I do very few shows and even entertain the idea of Jurying to get into a new outlet.I NOW ASK (usually to be a b/breaker) WHAT ARE THE CREDENTIALS OF THE JURY, to be able to sit in judgment of my work, which are primarily high end ($3 to $10K shades). The final judge of any work is the ONE WHO BUYS IT!

If all of us were more demanding of the places who condescend to take our work (usually on consignment, although of late only outright purchases along with some consignment will be considered by me) we would get more respect. I have in the past pointed out that if the artists/craftspeople STOPPED consigning work, your gallery/store would make a nice coffee shop or hamburger haven! I have been asked to leave (thrown out) on more than one occasion!

My usual epitaph: DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR DAY JOB!!!!!!!!
