book copying

I ordered a book from Amazon and know one of you will be able to answer this question. I found a project I want to do in there but the book is expensive and I would like to keep it nice. Will a knitting chart in color-- this one is purple-- copy at a normal printer in black and white ? I would rather not write in the book. Barbie

You may need to play a bit with the lighter/darker control to copy colors, but the only color that doesn't copy on a standard B/W copier is Non-Photo-Repro Blue, a specific shade of aqua used by printers/editors for marking up material. (However, I've even gotten that to copy with enough time, expertise, and readjusting the controls!)

The other thing that doesn't copy easily is black printing on bright red paper. We were doing a mail-in ballot and didn't want people to be able to stuff the ballot box, so first I handwrote the ballot, and then consulted with the printer. No matter how expert you are at copier controls, the color values are so close that you will always have a grey shadow from the red paper. (I know, because part of my assignment was to use my expertise to try, so the ballot counters would have some references for identifying counterfeited ballots.) That said, the printer did warn me that it was actually possible to copy black ink on red paper, with a very expensive filter available in a very few print shops; he didn't figure more than one or two in the city would have the right filter. It probably would have been easier for any devious person to hire a calligrapher to duplicate my distinctive handwriting, and an artist to exactly duplicate that intentional inkblot in the corner, than to find a high-end print shop with the correct filter. Bwahahahaha

There's also a shade of yellow that won't copy, but I don't remember the exact name or number. I used it when I was working. We had a tape that we could put over the area we didn't want to copy. I think some shades of yellow will still give you trouble, depending on how good the scanner or copier is.
