Color suggestions wanted...

I just got Anagram Diffusion's Element Sampler and am now trying to figure out how I want to do it. They show it done in red and white on a cream colored fabric. What I want to do with it is do each element with the colors associated with those elements. By that I mean, for example, reds for fire, browns for earth, etc. Where I'm getting a bit lost is when it comes to air and water, I tend to think of blues for both. I'm thinking that using overdyes might help with some of this confusion, but I thought I'd come here and ask: What color immediately comes to mind when you think of either element? Or the other elements, for that matter.

Thanks for any and all suggestions! Tegan

Don't have an answer for your specific question, but do have something else for you to think about: Be very careful about your use of color and try to stick with a color wheel do's and don'ts, otherwise all your work will look positively awful, no matter how well it is stitched.

Blues for air - greenish blues for water?

Air brings to mind white to me, or pale blues. Of course, you could go with sunrise/sunset colors!

Meant to add - blues for water, definitely!

True. I also thought of greens for earth as well, since grass is green (usually, unless it's in MY yard.. ). I'm thinking that this just may justify (like I need an excuse!) a trip to the LNS to play with fibers and get colour ideas. Tegan

Thea Dueck of The Victoria Sampler did a series on the elements. You can check her color choices at

My very first thought is a very pale sky blue for air and a Mediterrean blue for the water.

I like the way you think. It will be beautiful done in colors.

You know Tegan (imagine the slight drawing out of the "you know")

The more I look at this, you are going to have to be very careful with balancing the shades/hues you pick. And how will you stitch the globe? One color, all four?

That sounds kind of like it should be declared illegal! lol

Traditionally, the color for Air is yellow. Earth is green, Water is blue, and Fire red or orange. These are beautiful charts!

I'm thinking one kind of subdued main color and individual parts in a mix.

That reminds me of a comment in a book I've been reading. Someone commented on the change of terminology from personnel to "human resources" and the main character commented that always sounded vaguely cannibalistic to him. Interesting how these things develop.

Like why hasn't accounting ever become financial resources?

A dear young cousin of mine was in "human resources" (and I say that wrly) and we got into quite the little argument one Thanksgiving dinner. She was emphatic that the role (department) had completely changed and involved much more than interviewing "bodies" and placing them in appropriate positions. Hmmmm. My memory of the personnel department encompassed as much 40 years ago as it does today. No, she retorted, now they put on seminars and take specialty classes in how to motivate employees, etc. etc. etc. (yawn) Yep. I've been to those. Foolish waste of corporate money. If you *do* happen to get a buzz from one of these "seminars", it is usually short-lived.

Well, some treasury officials (banking and insurance business) do maintain "financial resources." Seriously, CFO's used to be called comptrollers. That word has been obsolete for a very long time, now.

Yes, it is strange how things change but stay the same. Or get stranger, whatever your point of view.

To be truthfull, I haven't even gotten that far yet! I haven't thought too much about the globe yet. My inspiration here is all Marc's (needlemania) fault, you know. He did their Four Saisons in the same manner that I'm trying to figure out. I was sorta thinking about choosing a fairly dark color for the continents and blue for the oceans. But I do think I'll wait until I go to the LNS to figure out colors, since I haven't picked a fabric, either. Tegan

They are, aren't they? Ya' know, I wonder where yellow comes in for Air? The rest of them make sense, but, honestly, living in the upper reaches of Tornado Alley, yellow air is NOT something you want to see!

What I'm imagining is basically a five color sampler. Well, maybe six. Since it's originally done as a monochromatic design, I don't want to do all the individual motifs in separate colors, just the four elements in a color appropriate for that element. And just to throw another wrinkle in there, I'd like to use silk to do it.. This could be a challenge! LOL Tegan

With the chief exception of budgeting, true financial accounting is historical. "Financial resources" would be more appropriate for the investment, fund raising, or acquisitions areas. I'm sure it would be a favorite with political candidates.

I agree that the change from pers> That reminds me of a comment in a book I've been reading. Someone commented
