design transfer with graphite paper??

I went looking for some transfer paper to transfer a design from a print out to a tea towel for surface embroidery. The local stitch shop said ordinary graphite paper would work just fine. Has anybody ever done this?? Did it wash out??? I have used graphite paper to trace a draft of lettering on to wood for painting, but not on fabric, and am a bit leery.

I usually use graphite paper or even tracing or carbon paper. They all wash out. I wash linen or cotton fabric at 60 degrees Celsius (140 F). I have only a precaution with new sheets of carbon paper: I rub away the excess of ink with some waste paper . Don't press too much with the pen when you trace the design. I don't know if on non-natural fabrics, such as polyester, will wash out with the same easiness.

This is reassuring, thanks Stefania. I will probably make a test mark or two on one towel and wash it, just to be sure; I am fairly certain they are pure cotton.

I make a throwoutable copy of my design and then trace over the lines on the *wrong* side with a 3B or 4B pencil. I centre the design (right side up) where it's meant to go on the fabric and then retrace the lines (this time, on the *right* side) with a ball-point pen. I do it on a hard surface (tabletop etc) so the impression will be sharp. This makes just enough graphite line to see the outline clearly, but not so much it'll be difficult to wash out. Maybe graphite paper's cheaper/easier, but I've never seen any for sale. ;-D
