Floods & ND

Hi all,

I imagined many of us are thinking a bit about our friends in the throes of flood preparations, and wanted to say that I spoke with Joan this evening. She sounded pretty chipper, and said the waters were about halfway up their yard, and around the backside of the house, but she wasn't worried about them getting really badly affected. I guess they're about 10 mi from the river, but up where they are she said they're expecting a 60' crest - yikes. Worse then their flood in 97. Her daughter who lives in Fargo visited yesterday - and said the water was up on the edges of the highway when she returned to Fargo.

Anyhow, we really were talking about the SAL, and me sending her some stuff

- which I guess is really bright and will keep her mind and hands off flood despair.

Just thought I'd share. She says her computer at home is really, really slow - and I wonder if they'll be at work tomorrow - as the universities are off and kids are helping sandbag, etc.

I'm keeping good thoughts for all those folks - cold and worried with floods. Silver lining of the cold - it slows the water flow.

And what fun that was!!!!! :)

Um, that would be *50* feet. Glacial Lake Agassiz, of which the Red River is the last remnant, will have returned at 60'. :)

Most definitely!!!!

Classes are canceled but the U is still open so I have to work. Darn.

Yup. I found an interesting site a bit ago which shows the river in a succession of photos over the past week.

top of the obelisk you see (Gill, you'll recognize this!) is theheight of the flood in '97. It's got a ways to go, yet, because asthe water spreads out it takes longer to go up. It won't crest hereuntil sometime next week.Right now 3 of the 4 bridges in town are closed and they're hoping tokeep the last one open as long as possible. Right now it's one of thefew bridges along the northern half of the river that is. Think good thoughts for Fargo, where it's supposed to crest in the next day or so. Right now there is a bit of evacuation happening.

Our local TV station has a short clip of a flight over the river, starting at the southern end of the valley and working up towards Fargo.

Look for "WDAZ Extended NewsClips" and scroll down the list next to the picture. Not the bestquality, but you'll get the idea. The white rings around the houses are the sandbag dikes. Thanks for thinking of us! Joan
