Help with mystery project

I used to be a member of this group years ago... hoping there's someone around who will recognize this sampler...

Probably started it in the late 1990s or early 2000s. I think it was a mystery sampler, or at least it was provided in sections so you could personalize or arrange them however you'd like. I can't remember who designed it -- just that they were very talented, and a member of this group when it was published... :)

This may just be a big red herring, but around the time I started this, there was a big needlework convention in Houston. (I was living in the area back then.) Big surprise -- can't remember what the convention was, who sponsored it, etc, but I do remember that several people I knew from R.C.T.N attended. I also remember my favorite purchase, a Scarlet Letter Scottish sampler, and -- more to the point -- a clear vinyl thread manager that I don't think I'd seen before, which I used to store the threads for the mystery sampler:

This is only half of it -- it's probably about 12" high x 20" long. There are two layers of vinyl with fused seams that basically form tubes you can pull doubled skeins of thread through -- there's a long coiled flat piece with a hook on one end you can thread through the flat channels to pull the thread into place. You'll notice the doubled ends of the skeins sticking out a bit so you can pull a single strand out (the other ends are cut). A clue?

I realize this is all a very long shot, but would love to finish this... any clues/guesses are welcome :)

... and I messed up the link to the second photo (of the thread keeper):

My apologies! :)

None of the photo links work for me; sorry.
