It's been a while

Hi everybody,

It's been a couple of years since I've posted here, and my life has gone completely topsy-turvy since then. My newsgroup provider disappeared, and I never got around to finding a new one, but I didn't really have time, what with school, internship, and a new relationship. I'm engaged, living just outside of Boston, and am finally graduating with my Master's next week. (And no, we haven't set a date, because I haven't got a job yet, so there's no way to pay for it!)

I've got pics up on my blog

of the projects I've recently finished and framed. I've put in a gazillion hours lately BECAUSE I CAN. It's such a pleasure to have free time once again. Does anyone know if With Heart & Soul in Cumberland, RI is still around? The website is down, has been for a while.

I believe they are - several people on another list I read go there fairly often.

Nice to see you back Meredith. I have now started temari balls and have been teaching others. Maybe we will see you at Celebrations next year. Bobbie V.

Many congrats on all fronts, and well - you'll get a job soon, no doubt.

Glad to have you back - what a busy time. The finished pieces all look lovely, I really like the little herb garden piece.

My mean SIL, who stitches, lived in Exeter, RI for about 30 years, and recently moved from there. It seems to me that the LNS which she used closed about 2-3 years ago - for whatever that's worth. The name sounds familiar - but I could be wrong. The owner was originally closing the brick and mortar shop, keeping her webshop up, but then I think closed it all. If I talk to the SIL, I'll ask her - she'd likely know.

She says they're on Mendon Rd in north Cumberland. Try 1-800-789-9968 or local number 401-658-3470. Hope this is the place you're looking for.

Well, welcome home Merideth. Congrats on all fronts. Are you looking to teach or at industry now that you have your degree?

Could your SIL's shop be Tapestry of Dreams? That was also in RI and I think the owner went to a webshop. I'm waiting to hear about Heart and Soul. I really liked that shop, the 2 times I visited it. Nice and big and they have Vera Bradley also!

I think you've got it. Seems like some others were able to find the original shop of question.

Hi Meredith, Waving at you, I remember you from a long time ago. You put a picture up for me of my first bobbin lace attempt.

Well at the age of 69 I built my own website, at 70 I got my Clait diploma and this year I have done a digital imaging course and now doing family history.

Nice to see you here again, although I use my needle to do beadwork mainly. Shirley

It might have been Cross Stitch Unlimited in Arlington, MA. Lucy's still got the website going, but the shop closed about a year ago.

Industry, for sure. I liked my internships a lot more than my thesis!

I think I still have that on my hard drive somewhere! I took down that page sometime last year when I was cleaning things up...

I loved teaching, but hated the politics. Industry was fun. Sometimes I regret not going back after DD was born.

But it would certainly cramp your gardening time!

Ask me once I hopefully start working again. My friends here all think that doing the industry thing will be much better than the gov thing. But, hey - just waiting to see.

\it would cramp lots of things..... Gardening, crafting, parenting....

I'd rather the industry thing over the government myself.

Well, I've kind of learned that lesson. For a "young" engineer of the R&D bent - the gov lab thing is awesome. Much more exposure to entire projects, ability to get some responsibility, a little control of your destiny as opposed to if you go right to industry you haven't learned some of the "politics" and upper management, and end up frequently sitting in a corner doing calculations - of which I had plenty in grad school Not to be mistakne - but I was lucky, and got to do both technical work, get some support with technical stuff & oversee my helper contractors, and feel like I had some semblance of control. That said - my colleagues who went into industry - after a few years they had much less problem with career progress and resentment than did my female colleagues in the gov R&D track. It was much more straightforward for the women in the admin side.

Those who've done really well with career progress did the gov thing for about 5-7 years, and then took an early out package, moved over to industry and are really happy and appreciated. I was a shmuck, stuck around - and hit the glass ceiling hard. And along the way after about 6-7 years in (not having come in as a junior person anyhow) things got difficult with that narrowing pyramid of progress, and the culture - particularly as I ran teams with military officers having to report to me. The NCOs - awesome - no problems - but the guys trying to make it up from young captains, majors to especially the guys who were on my team and we helped them go from major to LTC - major attitude issues. So, I saw a lot of things, that at similar salary, career stages my friends in academia or industry weren't suffering with - just weren't tolerated. But, as they say, live and learn.

I did like very much that for the most part I worked with really great, capable folks, and well, those that weren't - for the most part we could accommodate somehow. And I got to learn much, do a lot, and that being self-motivated, having some autonomy will go a long way to satisfaction in balancing the not-so-good.

I am really, really hoping this job comes through, as it's a seemingly great group of guys in the company, and the work technically and managerially really appeals to me. I do like that sort of pollyanna-ish idea of doing something that makes a positive difference. So, still keeping fingers crossed.
