Needlepoint for Idiots?

Absolutely. A lot of Npers carry their projects in some kind of pillowcase

- one side dark, one light. Then you use it as a lap cloth - draped on your lap, or the base of your stand - wherever it will give you the best background for working on your project. I've taken some classes in which the instructor will actually include a lap cloth to bring with the other stuff. I also end up laying floss when using the multi-strands for NP - so if I want to do it quickly, and the look will work - Perle cotton is a great alternative.

I use the basketweave stitch whenever I have a large area of one solid color - it eliminates any "striping" that you would get with the tent stitch, and even with the continental stitch.

I've also been known to use the basketweave for the top stitch in large areas of one solid color in cross stitch pieces - for the same reason: no "striping". The bottom stitch for that area I do in rows (using the tent stitch) until the are is filled out, then do the top stitch with the basketweave.

Ah - how brave of you to start this now, or is it for 2007? Learn basketweave as well as 'cheap' stitch to avoid that pull effect. Buy MORE floss or wool than you think you'll need - this time of year, material tends to get hard to find (e.g. red felt....grrr)

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for making me laugh :) and for the compliments on the site. Me short and blonde? Sorry to destroy your mental image, but pleased you even had one.

I know exactly what you mean though about imagineing what someone looks like. I had a customer and friend who lived quite a way from me that I had never met. Eventually we ended up at the same lace fair and she wasn't a bit like I had dreamt. The only thing that I recognised was the voice, as we had talked many times on the phone. It didn't seem right that the voice I knew was coming from this "body" in front of me. I just couldn't put the two things together and come up with Jane. Weird.

Regards,
