Needlepoint with Eterna Silks

I've got a needlepoint kit from Rising River, off of NN, and it includes Eterna Silks. I have never worked with this particular thread before and wonder if anyone has any pointers? I know it is supposed to snag fairly easily. Can I wind it on bobbins? Also, my canvas came folded. What is the best way to get the crease out?

Thanks

Steam iron? Or damp cloth and iron? Can`t help with the silks - in fact I`d like to know more about them myself, please.

There are two main types of Eterna Silk. The stranded silk is fairly flat, and does snag easily. The mini-twist, on the other hand, is fairly easy to deal with. I wouldn't wind it on a bobbin, though. (I do wind my cotton floss, but my silk floss stays in hanks.)

I am using the stranded right now without difficulty. Make sure your hands are well manicured and they won't snag. I have had really good luck with it myself.

I've had limited experience with either the mini-twist or the other type they sell. You shouldn't have any peculiar problems with them. As for winding on bobbins: This is one of those "personal choice", "individual opinion" types of answers. I wind silk on bobbins. Some silk is sold that way. I wind - or don't wind - depending upon the situation: how much I need from a skein, how fast I'm using it up, etc.

Hi: Are you going to mount it in a scroll frame? Or use stretcher bars? if so 99 time out of 100 that will help remove the creases.

Be careful with the iron or steam as it can remove the sizing from the canvas and possibly cause bleeding of the painted design.

Sheen can be readily refreshed/restored by steaming when you're all through. Asian needleworkers then recommend brushing with a velvet sponge. I don't know what that is, nor have I tried it. But I know that steaming silk threads really, really brings out the shine.

I use Eterna silk mini twist for my finer work....the pieces I want to be extra special for gifts etc. I love it! I have never had a problem with it snagging, and I do keep mine cut to workable lengths and wrapped on a cardboard bobbin. Can't help you with the canvas though as I work mainly on silk mesh. My only problem with Eterna is finding a good source. My LNS shut down and there is no longer a B.C. supplier!

You know, for anybody wanting to try Eterna silks, I contacted them long before trying their threads and told them I didn't know which of their threads to use, and they sent me one skein of each just to try! So you might want to give that a whirl and see what happens! Mind you, I've since bought hundreds of dollars worth of Eterna silks so I guess it is worth the company to do that for their customers. lol

Ditto - as a result of the freebie I went right ahead and bought 400 skeins of their then 'new' line. $200 up front and the promise you would have them within six months. It actually took a little longer through no fault of theirs and I love the skeins.

Hi Linda,

It was Heirloom Needlearts in Surrey. Joan Wilson carried the full Eterna line. Geez I miss her! She even offered to sell me her business at the time, but I just wasn't sure enough of myself to jump at it. I've been kicking myself ever since.
