needlework shops to visit in NY city

Hi,

We're going to be visiting NY (Manhattan) in July, and I would like to visit any needlework shops that stock evenweave linen such as for Hardanger embroidery.

I can find heaps and heaps of knitting and yarn shops when I Google, but not needlework shops. Is this a reflection of the sad state of the hand-stitching industry, or am I just not finding the ones that are there?

Can anyone point me in the direction of any good ones?

Thanks in advance,

Yvette Sydney, Australia

Sadly, there hasn't been a Xst shop in NYC for ages. However, if you google "needlepoint" I believe you can find a few shops that carry linen in addition to canvas.

Good Luck!

Hi Yvette, Sorry, there are no needlework stores in NYC. Haven't been in ages. I think rather than the "state of the hand-stitching industry", it has a whole lot more to do with the costs of doing business in NYC. The rents are astounding, and there just isn't that much profit in a needlework store. There are several good stores in New Jersey though, and at least one is accessible by public transit from NYC. If that's of interest, I'd be happy to post more details. Heather

The only needlework shop I know of in NY is Erica Wilson. The website is

definately worth a look-see

Although I really started stitching 11 years ago I have always been interested in needlework from an early age, And Erica Wilson got me started. My stitching guru, if you will.

You brought back fond memories for me. I worked on 58th St and 5th Avenue and used to walk over there at lunchtime and spend my salary there. I wondered if they still were at that location.

I went in there once when I was young. I still love Erica Wilson stuff.

Mom did her crewelwork Peaceable Kingdom back in the 70's. That piece drove her nuts! She cursed that woman right and left, but she finished it, and framed it (God it's HUGE!). It is a beautiful piece, but apparently the directions left something to be desired in my mom's view.

I used to work on 57th and Madison (early 80's) and I don't remember the shop at all...was it on the first floor?

Nope, it was in the middle of the block land up a flight of stairs. There was another shop downstairs, but for the life of me I can't remember who it was or what they sold.

That tells you where my interests lie.

That probably explains why I never really noticed it!

There were some cool shops on that block as I recall, a great one that carried Scottish stuff, and one that carried all Asian items (I still have a jade ring and bracelet I bought there).

Thanks to all who have replied. How sad it is to not have one for such a highly populated area... :-( But yes, I can understand that the rents much be astronomical!

Here I was hoping to find some lovely linens and things that aren't available here in Australia. Oh well. There still is the internet.

Had a look at the Erica Wilson website. Mmmm... love her Cloisters collection particularly! Thanks for the link.

Maybe I'll ask about the other areas we will also be going to. Might (or might not) have more success there.

Thanks again,

Yvette
