OT - Bad movies

Yesterday, while waiting for people to return phone calls, I turned watched West Side Story on TV. After seeing a stage production on Broadway, I remember being very disappointed in the movie when it first came out. My opinion hasn't changed -- Natalie Wood was awful as a singing dancing Puerto Rican. Her dubbed voice bordered on operatic which, imnsho, was a poor choice.

What movies don't you like?

Today the dubbing etc would be much better but I haven't seen too many movies recently I liked. A friend in Tennessee recommends and I watch those as he knows what I like.

The last two or three were Amelia, Labyrinth (violent but in context) and one with that great British actress, she was a Lesbian, set back years ago when she would not have wanted it public knowledge. Hope someone knows the one I mean, I'm still sick and it is the antibiotics making my memory poor - that's my story anyway!

I like movies where, after a relative short time, you know what the happy ending is going to be. It is merely watching the details of how they get there. Jim.

The only one I can think of at the moment is Forrest Gump. At the time, it seemed like everyone but me loved it.

Oh, I guess if I had to name a musical, it would be Evita with Madonna. I saw the show on Broadway with Patti Lupone and didn't love it, but at least she did justice to the one good song--Don't cry for me Argentina.

Amelie I saw and loved, Labyrinth I will admit annoyed me because of the subtitles and since I rarely just sit and watch the screen I lose track, and the third one sounds intriguing, but a name would help.

I do hope you're at least starting to feel better. Bronchitis is just so debilitating.

I didn't love Forrest Gump either, and I expected to, because I adore Tom Hanks.

I never cared for Blazing Saddles, although all my friends thought it was the most hysterical thing they'd ever seen. I've since tried again and STILL don't like it.

Oh good! I too think Tom Hanks is surely one of the better Hollywood people. I doubt I'll ever forget him in Philadelphia.

Is it "The Killing of Sister George" with Beryl Reid?

when Titanic came out, everyone I knew was going on about the love story btwn Leo and Kate (their characters anyway)..I wasn't sad about that but the old couple that laid down on the bed together and the family with small kids; those got to me.

No it's Dame somebody and it's driving me nuts !

My all time favourite was/is Lawrence of Arabia. The filming, especially O'Toole dancing in the moonlight or striding atop the train, the music, everything just everything. David Lean was so talented.

The love story was the bit that killed the movie for me. In that era a passenger from steerage was NEVER going to be dining in First Class! Another couple of parts was no survivors recalled the band playing Nearer My God to Thee, nor did any of them recall steerage people having the door shut on them.

I also got annoyed when the movie lasted an hour longer then the real time it took for the ship to sink. Anything over 1-1/2 to 2 hours is much too long.

I found out recently that there was actually no good news that they brought from Ghent to Aix. When I mentioned this to some of my friends, they reminded me of the old adage; "never let the truth spoil a good story". Jim.

I know Hollywood likes to liven up even what was already truly dramatic, but really!

Since that movie people have regularly gone to the grave here in Halifax where some of the victims (or as television people make the mistake of saying survivors quite frequently) to place flowers and other stuff on the grave of one of the stokers who had the same name (by chance) as the male in the love interest. Is that whacky or what?

No good news from Ghent ? That's too bad but still a good poem.

I thought maybe I was the only person who liked movies like that! I do like the occasional serious movie, like "12 Angry Men", "Double Indemnity" or some of the old Humphrey Bogart movies but, normally, if I'm watching a movie I want to be entertained. If I want "real life" I can read the newspaper or think about what's going on with different parts of my family.

The first movie I really remember being disappointed in was "Call of the Wild". I had read the book and looked forward to the movie but was annoyed and disappointed that it had KISSING! I was 12 at the time and remember telling whoever would listen that "THERE WAS NO KISSING IN THE BOOK!" :-))))

The last "new" movie I think I liked was probably "The Lake House", and even that I liked better after watching it once and seeing how it ended. I didn't really enjoy it the first time around. We pretty much stick to Turner Classic Movies and the occasional trip to the Red Box for DH's choices.

I haven't thought of that poem for years---and now it is galloping (I galloped, Dirk galloped, we galloped all three!!!!) through my brain. We had one of the last of the Great Spinster English Teachers (her first name was Melba, after the soprano not the toast we hoped) and she was a firm believer in memorizing poetry. This was a good one because the rhythm could be beaten out with a yardstick on her desk.

There was also and 'the highway man came riding, riding'

I had a teacher like that and feel it was a good thing, I think learning by rote has stood me in good stead. When we came to Canada I had to retake my diving qualifications (if I wanted to fill my tanks) and I don't think I ever fully understood the Gas Laws, both times I just used memory lol Whatever the question on that, I just ran the particular law through my mind and quoted the appropriate part.
