We have a fairly old rescue kitty. He's not particularly playful - he lived on the street around the neighborhood for many years before we broke down and let him become a housekitty. Now he rules the roost! But he's not a particularly playful cat - he doesn't give a fig about kitty toys and only occasionally will play with a pen or chase kitty fairies (though he occasionally does a PsychoKitty routine). I'd call him (affectionately) a grumpy old man (GOM).
At Christmas, DD brought over a bag of catnip that her cats had no interest in, and my guy ate it right up and looked eagerly for more, more, more. He acted quite uncharacteristicly for him....acute senses, dilated eyes, VERY interested in following anyone to the source of such goodies. Super-alert.
We sort of joked that he was acting like a heroin fiend. So my question is, was that a typical reaction? Do some cats get very "high" on catnip? I am rather uncomfortable with the thought of giving him more, because his reaction was SO unlike him - a usually laid-back, imperturbable kitty made into an anxious bundle of nervous energy. (Then he went to sleep.) Is catnip harmful?
What is the usual reaction? And do cats *eat* the catnip, or just
*inhale* it?
