Yep. Was just talking to an old friend -- her single parent had to work so was never home -- and she commented that she doesn't know how my mother did it. Every weekend, every school holiday/vacation, most days after school, my mother had a house full of other people's kids.
She understood that we couldn't have gone to her house because there was no parent present to supervise, but why couldn't we go to A's house next door to mine once in a while? Quite simply, because A's mother didn't want us underfoot. Since they moved in (circa 1964), I remember being inside their house only three times, none of them during afternoon soap-watching hours.
The kids catty-corner simply ran wild from the time school got out till bedtime, because they were not allowed in their own house, and eventually their bad behavior wore out their welcome at all their friends' houses. Many days, their mother served cold cereal for dinner because she couldn't be bothered to cook.
My mother's theory was that if she had the hordes at our house, then she knew where I was, who I was with, and what I was doing.
