The IIHF Worlds in 2008 will be split between Halifax and Quebec city. Unfortunately both semifinals and gold medal final will be played in the Quebec city. It's expected that Team Canada will play its preliminary and qualifying round games in Halifax. So that should be exciting hockey! Sorry we don't have any LNS. :(

Yay, I found a place here in the Big Easy where I can sometimes buy Wensleydale cheese. Of course, it is more expensive than either lobster or steak, so I buy in tiny quantities.

Thanks for the offer Pat, much appreciated. Orkney produces its own "Extra Mature Cheddar" and a full flavoured "smoked cheddar", see . For other cheeses and "exotic" food there is a small deli in Kirkwall which sells - or can soon obtain - pretty well everything in that line. Bruce

MMmm!! Tried it the other week - definitely yummy!

Had some Cheddar from the cheese shop in Cheddar Gorge last time we were there. Lovely, but nothing out of the ordinary, really. Amazing how "Cheddars" can differ, isn`t it?

Interesting. My paternal grandmother (the one who baked really well) made a fabulous apple pie. And she always offered it warm - with either a slice of sharp cheddar, or vanilla ice cream.

After the time I was working in the UK, I came home addicted to real (not too sweet) marmalade on toast, and grilled tomatoes. And, custard with cakes for dessert...

That's so sad. Here in the DC area, and I bet Cheryl & Brat in New England

- we have some awesome cheese shops. One opened recently in DC - all artisan cheeses, they seem to know everything about all the farms which supply them. And a couple of the large groceries have a significant, and surprisingly varied cheese case. It's not quite the cheese counter at a grocery in France, but Wegmans is close, as is Whole Foods. They vary by individual shop.

I've found that I read labels in detail if I'm buying packaged, and then splurge on small amounts (not great for the weight loss program) from the cheese counter.

Maybe you can get someone else on your side of the pond to send you good cheese to the Orkneys....

YUM. We have a lot of PB & honey on toast or toasted english muffins (crumpets). Nutella - so good. My first encounter - when we were working in France, and the crew needed to stock our trailer on the site with some lunch stuff (we took an "American" break, rather than the much longer French break). So, the quest for Peanut Butter - and for many confused reasons, ended up with Nutella - as the closest thing - after all - it has the little hazelnut illustrations on the package. Imagine our surprise - nice fresh bread - and just spreading it with Nutella - then realizing - CHOCOLATE. Nutella, and a nice Bordeaux - yummy. Actually, I think we had a lot of Nutella with Cahors (very, very dark, Romans called it "blood wine) - kind of on the outskirts of Bordeaux, and the domaine I lived in. FWIW - after about a month, finally found the French version of PB - I think the first batch was in a can...but then we found some fine stuff.

Try to stay away from Nutella now - it's addictive.
