OT: Handholding Followup

Yeesh...

The same day I posted originally about my gallbladder difficulties, I ended up making an emergency trip to the hospital. The pain was just too much to deal with, so just shy of midnight my husband bundled me up and took me up the hill to the hospital clinic.

I've just gotten home from a week in the surgical observation ward.

An ultrasound and an MRI (which was really neat) and a crapload of bloodwork showed that I've got quite a few of the more troublesome size of gallstones. The doctors seemed to think that the pain that sent me to the hospital was probably because I was passing a stone.

I'm feeling much better, but I've still got that pesky gallbladder inside of me. I go back in two weeks for a 'kontroll' as they call it here. More bloodwork and a followup ultrasound. Only then will they decide if they're going to put me on the table.

Glad I get a two week rest before more bloodwork. I've got four punctures in each arm and the brusing is awful. I've got such tiny veins that they have to use infant needles. Even so, they had to saw the needles back and forth to get them to 'bite'. It's such an awful feeling.

Anywho...I'm on a very plain diet for now. With any luck, I'll drop a few pounds to boot. That can't be a bad thing.

Oatmeal...again? Becky A

Becky,

I feel your pain, or remember feeling it.

My gallstones first presented as a pain in my back, just below the ribcage the last week of November, 2002. My doc (in not his brightest moment) sent me for a pelvic ultrasound. Which found an ovarian cyst, but not the source of the pain. My GYN (followup to the cyst! lol) ordered the proper ultrasound of my gallbladder, kidneys, liver (central guttiworks basically).

Now, about 2 weeks after the pain started I find out about the gallstones.

Back to my normal doc, who gives me more pain pills and sends me to a surgeon. Because it's December, and people are trying to use up their payroll deduction money I can't get into the OR until January 10th.

Spent Xmas stoned on painkillers, don't remember it that well to be honest.

New Year's night I end up in the ER, because the pain is so bad I can't even keep it down with the pills. They shoot me full of demerol, send me home.

The trip to the ER did manage to move up my surgery by a week tho.

When they took the gallbladder out they found I had a stone lodged in the bile duct, and that was why I was in pain all the time.

So, as you see, I can totally commisserate with you.

Hope you get the sucker out soon, no more of this messing around with tests.

What a shame they didn`t do it then and there while you were all psyched up for it! It`s not half so scary once you`re in hospital and can just lie back and let them do whatever they need to do. Good luck anyway - hope they soon sort it.
