OT: Hurricane Katrina.

That was exactly what I meant by ethnocentrism Dianne. I have just cited some examples in another post. My point is that we do our best to help when we can and I know other countries do too and I like to correct it when I see it written.

Since most people (not bloody governments) will help other people I hate to see them dismissed like that. Maybe it is specific to the eastern coast, but I don't really think so.

Of course there are countries that never step forward, but generally that is because they can barely keep themselves afloat!

I was reading recently that in the last ten years the gap between the worlds richest and the worlds poorest has widened. This bodes ill for the future I believe.

I agree. Even if the poorer countries can't afford to send vast amounts of money, they could send a few guys with strong backs to help with the physical labor of clean-up.

This is a bad one for sure - I hope all stay safe ... these storms seem to be getting worse and worse each year - is God mad at us??

But you do remember, don't you, that you claimed that nobody would rush to help the Louisianans harmed in this hurricane ?

to our assistance

There are many Americans who were on the flights sent down here on Sept 11 who will tell you of their undying gratitude to Nova Scotians and Newfoundlanders .......

******** and HERE you forgot to mention New Brunswickers - we had loads of planes grounded here and took very well care of them. There were so many volunteers to bring these people - strangers into our homes that they ran out of strangers, not volunteers. Isn't that a great thing? We had chefs from some of the best hotels here handing out free good - not to mention - excellent food!!! to the people who were stranded. So many people willing to help - to do anything that was needed. *************************************** ................................................................

Well, don't forget that I LIVE in one of the northern "suburbs" of Atlanta. If you make it this far, don't worry about having to sleep in a hotel while you wait for a flight to somewhere else! You are more than welcome to spend a night or four with MOI! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I know Sharon, but still the myth remains, nobody does anything for Americans. It is true, we tend to do it more quietly as a rule, but on this occasion, I saw the accusation again and could not refrain.

We had the all-time hottest July this year, while last year my aunt's area was setting records for number of days between drops of rain (somewhere over 180 days).

Something's weird out there. Not sure if God is mad, or just displaying a warped sense of humor.

I have to put in my little 2 cents worth. It is all that global warming that is *not* caused by carbon dioxide!!! (VBG)

It looks like the eye of the hurricane has gone or will go just east of downtown New Orleans. I'm not sure just where "downtown" is but I think it is in the vicinity of The French Quarter -- between I-10 and The River. When DH & I were there last year and went shopping with Olwyn Mary & her DH we drove by where her house is. It is probably not more than a mile inland from the river -- hopefully it is far enough inland to avoid the storm surge which is supposed to be more than 16 feet. I can't remember the name of the district she is in -- maybe the Garden district but I'm not sure -- I seem to remember another name like Munitions District or something that starts with an M. I do know that, with your back to the river and looking inland, she is to the left of The French Quarter by several blocks. Since it is the west side of the hurricane that is hitting the area, the winds won't be quite as bad. The flip side to this is that the east side of the hurricane will be hitting the Florida panhandle and the western side of Florida. I don't remember just *where* Lucille lives but I am afraid it is on the Gulf side. I just hope that all of our RCTN friends make it through this OK. I'm watching The Weather Channel and they just showed video of Bourbon Street. Everything looks OK but I don't know how old the photos are and they are reporting 85 MPH winds. I do hope that The French Quarter makes it through without too much damage. It's such a lovely, historic area that it would be absolutely heart-breaking if there was too much damage. Most importantly of course, we want the people and pets to be safe but I still add a little prayer for the wonderful structures and architecture of The French Quarter. Anyone with more info, PLEASE post, OK? CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Still watching The Weather Channel. Latest report is that the eye wall is about 18 miles SSE of downtown New Orleans with winds up to 65 MPH. This is at about 8:30 AM Eastern time. What is *really* telling is that TWC doesn't even have anyone actually reporting from New Orleans! The rest of the Gulf area looks bad and will get worse as the storm surge is VERY high. Hugs and prayers to all. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Good Morning America is reporting from New Orleans that the Superdome, where over 10,000 took shelter, is leaking, and that windows are blowing out in hotels.
