OT: Hurricane Katrina.

Oh, it's *so* not even close. It won't even *occur* to most folks to make that connection, much less think that amending the Constitution, or even tightening restrictions, would be an appropriate response.

Best wishes, Ericka

I can never tell with Fred if he is joking or being serious. Lately he has been muddling up Canada and the USA. If he is joking, then it is not worth replying. If he is serious, it is not worth replying. Against my better judgement, here goes. (*VERY* heavy sarcasm mode on) Item 1. There has been a recent upsurge in gun related crime in Toronto, to the delight of all police forces in the Metropolitan Toronto area. All levels of government and police forces are now considering ways in which this trend can spread, as rapidly as possible, to all cities, towms and villages, in all Provinces the length and breadth of Canada. Item 2. With the unanimous consent of both the House of Commons and Senate, a bill is to be rushed through Parliament, giving Canadian citizens the same rights to bear arms as US citizens. It is expected that this bill will be signed into law while Adrienne Clarkson is still Governor General. Item 3. Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal is startig a new course Marc Lepine 101. This course will train young male mysogonists the most effective way of using firearms to kill female engineering students. (Sarcasm mode off).

-- Jim Cripwell. A volante tribe of bards on earth are found,/ who, while the flattering zephyrs round them play,/ on "coignes of vantage" build their nests of clay;/ how quickly from that aery hold unbound,/ dust for oblivion!/ To the solid ground/ of nature trusts the mind that builds for aye. This is a "you're both right" situation IMHO. Canada has long restricted many sorts of weapon which have no legitimate use other than hurting or terrorizing others, and should do so. There is no reason for citizens to have the kind of assault weapon Marc Lepine had, anywhere, anytime. There is almost no reason for anyone in most major urban centres in Canada to own a gun. Target shooters and sport shooters know the potential dangers of guns, and are always cooperative with good safety precautions like locked access and separate ammunition storage.

But rural residents have very good reasons to own hunting rifles and similar weapons. Shooting bird and animals pests, and scaring off dangerous animals (bear attacks in Manitoba this year), is necessary for farmers, ranchers, trappers and others. And unfortunately, sometimes they are necessary for personal protection where police response time is not minutes but sometimes hours. There have been a number of really ugly incidents in rural Saskatchewan--home invasions, armed robberies, beatings. The complex process of getting approval for what farmers see as essentially a basic tool like the tractor frustrated many people who had owned guns for years and never done anything wrong. That being said, rural Saskatchewan is not exempt from spousal abuse and family violence, and police tend to expect that there will be a gun on the premises. It isn't simple

It is also complicated here by the fact the First Nations people feel they are not bound by gun control legistation because of treaty promises, and some people resent doing things that the guy down the road doesn't have to, just on principle.

I am very much a supporter of gun control, but the current law became yet another sore point with Westerners and others who felt the framers of this law had no understanding, and no regard, for the way some of us live. Dawne
