Sadly, the best bagels we get around here are at a Stop and Shop that has several signs declaring "Kosher Bakery" and Kosher under Authority of Rabbi X. And while they are the best of the lot locally, they still aren't "real bagels".

Even here in South Florida the bagels aren't as good as they were in New York. They used to say it had something to do with the water used to boil them before baking. New York had really good water that came from the mountains, unlike the stuff here in FL that comes from who knows where.
I've had bagels in Israel and thought they didn't even come close. They just didn't have the crisp, crunchy crust and the soft, chewy center that I know and love.
