OT: Preserving Family Photos question

Since the group seems to be the font of all knowledge - I am in the midst of a project to make copies of the family photos and papers for all siblings. Mom wants me to get the photos out of the sticky-paper books they are in and into archival sleeves.

The problem is that the only sizes I can find the sleeves in are either 8X11 document or 6X4 snapshot size. These work fine with the large photos or the snapshots. However - most of the photos from before 1960 are in odd sizes and either don't fit into the sleeves or rattle around and slide right back out.

Has anyone seen any other type of sleeve? We really want to get the photos off that sticky stuff before they get glued to it (which has happened in one book already). Just to note - some of these photos are over 100 years old.

VERY important, those pages are deadly but do it carefully.

I had so many that I purchased archival boxes for them and wrote carefully on the backs who the people in them are - having learned from my grandmothers photos that neither my aunt or I know who some of the people are and can only hazard a guess. I also made up photo repeats into boxes for each kid. They can have the balance when I am gone.

Be prepared, it's a long and tedious job lol

Hi! No help with the sleeves other than to check with scrap-booking websites. But: One suggestion: scan each page of photo's into the computer (and into a computerized family album) BEFORE you disassemble it. That way you will still have the original layout, and avoid tearing and losing any photo's. Sandy

Fran from my experience , old photos need some treatment, at times and you better ask experts about it . It might be against bacteria or fungus, that tend to attack old photos and documents. mirjam

You could scan the old photos and convert them to suitable sizes to match the sleeves.
