Old Family Photos

Was perusing a genealogy magazine today while at Borders & found a couple of sites of interest to those of us with old family photos. They let you post old photos to share with others who might be related to you & you can also post "mystery photos" where you hope someone can help you identify who's in them.

Then, there's the site I've been browsing periodically for a couple of years:

Found a few relatives at that one! I've got a few old photos I should post to see if anyone can help ID them.

"Met" (we've not met in person yet, but have emailed, snail mailed & talked on the phone) a 3rd or 4th cousin a year or so ago. She's been emailing me photos this past week that she needs ID'd. Had to forward them to my dad so see if he's any help, since I can only D one person in one of 8 or so photos . . . my great grandmother (a pic I didn't previously have!).

Thought I'd share the sites above in case anyone found them useful.

As I'm our family historian and am still working on scrapping my great grandmother's photos all these sites come at a great time. I also inherited a small leather, locking album about 4x3 with old daggerotypes (sp!) or tin types (clothes look civil war era). It's an album of over 40 portraits all only 1x1 in size. My grandmother insists they're all family though even my great-grandmother didn't know how or who (at least at end of her life). It's very, very cool. So you know I'll be posting those but don't imagine I'll get much help just due to their antiquity. And of course there a few pictures with a few "friends" of my great grandmother's father so I'll post those and I believe they are trackable. Thanks again!

Very cool! I have one tintype of my grandfather as a baby, tho it's closer to 2x3". They are very sensitive to light, so my suggestion would be scan them once at the highest resolution you could want for any project, then close the album up again.

OK, just did a search & found an article on caring for tintype photos. The author doesn't caution protecting them from the light. With modern scanning techniques that allow us to display good quality copies, I say err on the side of caution.

Point us in the direction of where you post them, once you do, OK?

Alicia!

Thank you for these great sites. I have many photos that I"m not sure who is who and maybe, just maybe, I can get some answers. You hate to throw away photos but it's very frustrating not knowing who's in the shots.
