Here is a tip when scanning B&W photos that you are going toprocess further with tools like photoshop or elements: When you scan a B&W photo don't scan it in gray scale. Instead scan it in full color at 300 to 600 DPI. When you open it in photoshop or elements, look at the photos channels one at a time. Often with old or damaged photos you will find that one of the three channels is much cleaner than the other two channels. You can then use the 'good' channel to create a clean image.
