There is an excellent book "Fire and Ice (Canada, the United States and the myth of Converging Values)" which actually goes into the differences in attitude, and opinions of Canadians and Americans. It's written by Michael Adams. He's a pollster (and founder of the polling firm Environics) who started out with the idea that Canadians and Americans are becoming more and more alike, only to find that in most areas of opinion (health care, military, equal rights, public service, religion, altruism) we are actually diverging strongly more and more. Canadians (in general) are more left of centre and becoming more that way, while Americans (again, in general) are right of centre and moving more towards the right.
I've heard him speak, and he's fun, and really interesting.
