OT - soft sculpture reference

TIA (thanking you in advance)

I'm searching for books or online entities that teach or discuss the basics of soft sculpture. The ones I've been able to borrow from the libary are full of beautiful illustrations and history lessons but fall short on how to's. Please think along the lines of Dummies or Idiots books.

Anne , I am not happy with the term Soft Sculpture , but that is a semantic debate ,,, But here are some books that deal with 3d Fiberart. "Stumpwork", Historical & Contemporary Raised Embroidery, by Muriel Best, B.T. Batsford, 1990 [rep] "Raised Embroidery" A practical guide To decorative Stumpwork, by Barbara Roy Hirst , Merehurst 1993 [rep] The neatest photo i ever saw [ no instructions] is on page 34 , in a book called "Needlework" , by Adolph S. Cavallo , Copper Hewit Museum , 1979. And the Jewel of them all is "The art of Manipulating Fabric , by Colette Wolff , Chilton, 1996. best of creative enjoyment mirjam

Mirjam's reply made me wonder. Are you thinking about stumpwork/raised embroidery, for which she has given you several references, or are you looking for the manipulating of fabric to create a three-dimensional object? I was thinking that doll-making books might be a source for some simple advice on the last one, since sometimes that involves taking stitches into fabric to define and raise a nose or an eyelid. Mirjam and Dawne,

I'm looking for references that have step by step instructions for facial features on dolls. Most of what I've found so far assumes a level of knowledge that I don't have. I want to know where and how to start and stop threads, what kind of threads to use, etc., etc., etc.

I love stumpwork and have plans to use my newly acquired, absolutely gorgeous, threads to do some in the not too distant future. Thanks for the references.
