OT - The Great Sprouts Debate - Redux

Hey gang - so 2 brussels sprouts comments.

First - our crazy springer spaniel, Puckster, evidently loves them. As he enjoyed several last night while DH & I were eating dinner. And fortunately, I haven't noticed any bizarre or horrid odor effects.

2nd - I did my little comparison test - and did not "x" the bases where the stems had been cut off, as I usually do. Cooked the same way besides that. The larger sprouts (some were pretty big) tasted fine - but the interior was definitely too hard - a bit over crunchy.

So, here's my thinking - if the sprouts are of the typically smaller size - say

Several years ago when I set up a new aquarium my sister brought me a large "Mystery Snail", but there wasn't any algae in the tank yet. I knew the snail would be hungry and need something to eat, so I got a brussel sprout out of the bag in the freezer and put it in the tank for the snail. He loved it!

We used to grow brussel sprouts, and they are so much better than the ones you can find in your local grocery store produce section! Although the plants get to 3 feet or more in diameter, you only need 3 or 4 of them for a year's supply of the sprouts, and they freeze beautifully.

I have noticed a couple of times when I have gone to the farmers markets in the northern states, that people will sell the sprouts right on the stalk. I guess you sit the stalk somewhere cool, maybe in water, and pick off however many you use for the meal. My dad always grew them in UK, and I grew them one year in Maryland. DH, who was DBF back then, said he had no idea they grew like that; he had only seen them in the freezer section of the grocery store! I think he pictured them as minute cabbage plants LOL

I'm not sure I should admit it, but I thought they grew like little cabbages too. lol

It's obvious I've never been a farmer. I guess you can take the girl out of the city but you can't take the city out of the girl.

It's hot and humid here as well and the air conditioner is working overtime. Doesn't the world know it's March?

My goodness, a brussel sprout plant with a stalk 3 feet in diameter. How tall is it?

LOL - the AC was working yesterday. I just got back from a lovely stitching outing, and have swapped back to the heat as the temp has dropped and will continue towards freezing tonight, with the chilly rain, and expected snow tomorrow night and Saturday afternoon. What a confused season.

LOL - don't you think she means the multiple stalks of a plant?

I really DO hope so - otherwise we will soon be reading the obituary of the first person to be killed by a falling brussel sprout

IIRC, there is normally just the one stalk. However, it is 20 years since I grew them, and I may have forgotten. Maybe she meant the top of the plant was 3 ft in diameter; The leaves below which the sprouts form.

I really thought the OP meant 3 feet high! I sure hope so at least!

Us, too - it's DH's favorite. And another interesting plant to see growing.

Come on down!! It is in season here, I guess, since it is down to $1.99 a pound in Publix this week.

Everytime I went to Florida I always wondered how they came up with a name like that for a stupidmarket.
