OT: U.S. primaries & interesting times.

Senility is setting in - or maybe a Miracle-Eye moment. I read this topic as US PRIMATES - which actually might make sense, on second thought.

As for the primaries, we`re totally sick to death of having them thrust down our throats on all the Newscasts. Once a day would be PLENTY!

Obama seems a nice lad, but do you really want a child to run the country? ;-)

Hallo Pat, I think that we as outsiders aren`t supposed to have an opinion ,, But like you i think the man is rather young for this position, i also do wonder why he doesn`t salute the Flag ? He runs for President of a Country which this Flag symbolizes ???? mirjam

At least he tried to make decisions. Totally unimpressed with his cabinet choices.

True story. About 20 years ago, there was a recent graduate from college, who could not find a job. He was in his early 20's. He ran for Mayor of Cornwall (town here in Ontario), and not only got elected. He got elected twice, he made such a good job of being mayor. Jim.

I'm not old enough to actually remember his cabinet choices, so I'd have to go look them up to comment.

I forget whether it was Energy or Defense that annoyed me the most; at that time I was really interested in potential energy sources and the collective administration take on anything nuclear seemed to be "radiation bad". And the Education decisions were horrible. And don¹t get me started on foreign policy or defense.

Well, since America affects the whole world, and we get all the details thrust at us daily, I don`t regard us as outsiders - we have every right in the worl to voice our opinion! ;-)

That would be because he's not in the military, nor has he ever been, and only military personnnel (current or retired) actually SALUTE the flag. Everyone else is supposed to place their hands over their hearts during the National Anthem, but technically the only people who are *allowed* to salute the flag (straight hand to hatbrim) are those serving in the armed forces.

If he were to be elected, he would then become the Commander in Chief, and I'm not sure whether he would then be considered a serviceman or not. There's been discussion of that in other fora, and I'm not sure what (if any) conclusion was reached.

And only when in uniform, so the question of whether the commander-in-chief should salute is moot, unless he's wearing uniform and if our president starts wearing a military uniform, there will be more to worry about than his respect for the flag.

On the Bible, like every other US Senator except for Senator Ellison. Why do you ask?

Picking nits, but I believe Ellison is a congressman, and he used the Koran, as a Muslim.

I was listening to a radio program the other day, and a Bible is not mandated for the oath. IIRC a couple of presidents in the early days didn't use the Bible; one of them swore on a Legal book.

Maybe Hillary could swear using a cookie cookbook; I guess not, she said she doesn't bake cookies.

You're right...sorry, I should have said senators and representatives and the fingers got ahead of the brain typing "Senator Ellison"! ;-) As far as I'm aware, all of the current US senators and representatives have sworn on the Bible except for Rep. Ellison, who is Muslim and did use the Koran.

Correct. Neither the Bible nor any religious text is required. Sure created lots of fuss with Ellison, though for the life of me I don't particularly understand why. What did people expect him to do?!

Swear me in on a needlework book, then!

I've always rather liked the sound of President Karen, and I'm nowhere near as divisive as Hillary.

Oops, one more correction. I forgot about Rep. Wasserman- Schultz. She swore her oath (the unofficial photo-op one, as the official oath in the House is sworn en masse with no books of any sort) on a Tanakh. All the other current Jewish senators and representatives have, I believe, used the Bible, though other politicians (including John Quincy Adams, who was the one using the law volume, Franklin Pierce, who used no book, and Theodore Roosevelt, who used no book for his first oath of office, along with at least some governors and probably others as well).

Best wishes, Ericka
