OT: Xbox 360s--vent

What is it about a $400 "toy" that turns normally intelligent and pleasant people into raving idiots?

Microsoft decided not to send out enough of the darn things. Immediate shortage ensued. Our store got 18, but took in close to 100 preorders.

All day idiots walked past the "Sold Out" sign to ask if we had any, when we were getting more (we don't know, Microsoft hasn't said yet), and didn't like the fact that all of ours would be going to those who preordered.

The poor people who preordered and didn't get one, those people were justifiably upset. I felt bad for them, but I didn't need them screaming at me over it. Not my fault, I didn't arrange this shortage. I didn't take one for myself and bump a customer off the list (as I was accused of several times). I will not own one myself for at least a year or two, when the price comes down A LOT! Our store is more than willing to refund deposits, and we offer apologies and as much sympathy over what happened as possible (blaming Microsoft mostly).

One person who called the day before to find out he was in the 2nd shipment was especially nasty on the phone to me, but later called back to apologize. However, the next day he called the corporate customer service number and told a variety of lies about the conversation. I had a long phone call with my District Mgr (the man who is supposed to let me know today if I get a promotion!) telling whatI remembered from the call. I know I never told this man he'd been bumped, and wouldn't get his until MAY! Course, he also claimed the person on the phone was named Stephanie.

People can truly suck.

After hearing some interesting things about Sony having added spyware to the Xbox and many of the games, I'm not buying one!

Hang in there, Caryn, keep your sense of humour - make a bet on how many of the so-and-sos you`ll get in in one day, perhaps. You could even (politely!) tell them what number they are on the list! LOL!

At the same time, build on your "thick skin"!!! I had a lot of this when helping in my Dad`s shop, many years ago. You have to keep smiling at all times - it`s the best way of getting your own back on a nasty customer and annoys them like heck! (Of course they may tell everyone you`re insane, but what the hell!)

Actually, it's the Sony label *music* CDs (not games). They put some little program on them so that when people play them (or burn them onto an MP3 player) on their computer, it gets installed. Not sure what that little program is supposed to do (maybe track the # of plays, burns?), but it was apparently hijacked by spyware writers, and now does bad things.

Here's Texas' side of the story:

I guess this wouldn't be a good time to mention that I won one from Mountain Dew? I got my Platinum bundle on Saturday. (One big thing with the prize package was that winners would receive their systems before the stores did.)

The one on my system reads that it has 13GB free. It does come with pre-loaded info, but 7GB worth?

Yes and no! Certain new Xbox games can be played online and the registration code for the game is harvested by Sony along information about the user's system. Then if the game is played on another system; like if your child takes to play at a friend's house, Sony has software that picks up the same codes and disables the machine as Sony assumes it is an illegal copy. It was on Marketplace a few days ago.

And go for it Texas!

Cheryl,

Could you please point me in the direction of this article? I have several game requests on my gift list this year. I know that Sony makes the Playstation games normally, my gaming geeks are wracking their brains right now trying to think of Sony titles for the XBox or XBox 360. So I want to be able to share this info with them before we spend too much money this season.

TIA,

Well, that's the M$'s basic idea, they ship way too little of the machines so everyone thinks that they sell so well that every shop is sold out... It's just plain marketing trick. The machine will be in Finnish market closer to Christmas, we'll see how the fight goes on with PSP and Xbox 360..

I'll double check with DH - he'll know which night it was on the radio, but this is interesting reading

Would you believe some of these systems have sold for $12,000-18,000 on Ebay! Crazy!

That's beyond outrageous. I did check eBay, just for grins, and fould one auction of a system won in the Mountain Dew thing. It went for $850. Even though we'd never have sprung for one, we are keeping this. It's pretty good so far.

Thanks Cheryl. That is an interesting idea. But as I suspected, that is talking about the Playstation 3 which is a Sony product. Still googling for an info on Sony- XBox relation.

Boy, all the rental stores are going to be watching this closely. If it goes through, then PS3 games will be unrentable and you won't be able to resale them at Game Stop or other stores like that. That will sure make people think twice about purchasing the title in the first place. I know we often have the kids rent a game first to see if they are really interested in it or simply caught up in the hype. Sony may shot themselves in the foot if they pursue this technology on game disks.

You can see some of the higher, crazier bids here:

I think Sony has shot all ten toes and maybe broke both kneecaps. There are too many legal ways for a game or music to be in multiple machines. I hope Texas collects all those fines!

This is just plain obscene!! I am willing to pay a reasonable amount for something I really want, but $9000 for a damn toy!! I am not a bleeding heart liberal, I have earned what I have, but there is something terribly selfish about this. I can't help but think that Salvation Army etc could feed hundreds of people for this.

Oh, well, may the winner have a Happy thanksgiving. maybe he is the turkey, and we will cook him tomorow!

Possibly the only justification for it is that it keeps several people in employment - not that they`ll benefit from a high percentage of the take!
