Really - about the fly bonnet? I've seen them in some different fabrics, 'cause the do have the ear covers as well at times. Or you can just get the ear hood things - I've never used them, but know some show jumper types that use them. Just a thought.
Yup - when I was in high school the big thing was that when the temp dropped to 60 we were allowed to wear pants. Only the 1 year, after that, they got normal and we could wear pants whenver.

Actually, for the size of the house, we're not upset with the bills. We've been debating about closing down vents. At one point DH wanted to shut the upstairs furnace, and just rely on convection from the one that pumps to the main and lower floor. I nixed that - the HVAC is sized assuming both units. But, I have closed vents down in the not used spare guest rooms - for now (until DH's office gets set up in one). Then, I realized that our closet is really comfy - even with a window - and looked up - the vent - wide open. So, that got shut down quite a bit. The only place we think there is an issue with the insulation is in the pantry - which is a wide closet w/double doors in the breakfast room end of the kitchen. I'm pretty sure there is missing insulation in the exterior wall there, as well as along the exterior wall that runs behind the long counter/cabinets. The pantry is like a chiller right now, and even touching the wall between the upper & lower cabinets is quite cold. WRT the pantry - well - there is a heating vent on the floor of the breakfast room just near it - so no reason for it to be soooo cold. We've had several fights with the builder, they were supposed to do some core samples to look at the insulation, but never did. So, we're going to do it - at least pull some dry-wall bits to look, and then include our findings in our suit against them. OTOH, saves some fridge space - all the juice, etc stays quite cool in the pantry!

Poor things, sounds brutal. I had to go get the hair done, and actually borrowed DH's gloves, and wore my lovely CAPS polar-fleece helmet hat. Yes, it looks seriuosly like a Bauer hockey helmet - but is made of polar fleece. Complete with straps like a real helmet. Quite the look. But, idiot that I am, I just slipped on my Merrel suede clogs, which are fur lined (synthetic) and pretty warm, but don't do well with socks - forgetting that I was wearing not overly long pants, and my ankles were freezing on the drive back and forth. I guess I'm going to have to dig out my Uggs - the most comfy boots - seriously. I also have their clogs, and those I can wear with socks
- just wasn't thinking.

Ya know something, Cheryl..... I would love to see birds at my feeder down here. Up in New England, I hung them oustisde the RV, and we thoroughly enjoyed them. here it too a four months before the squirrels realised there were feeders, and I have yet to see a "real" bird on them in four months. Weeeell actually that is a bit of a lie' one day a couple of months back I heard a cardinal in the shrubbery. It was a "she" and she did go to the feeder. Other than some doves..that is it for birdwatching. So sad!!

To be honest, Ellice, I thrive in cold weather....and wilt in hot weather. My energy level likes the outside to be cool. This morning ( Friday) was 19 degs warmer that yesterday.. and I wore a shirt, sweatshirt, jeans jacket....and horror ofall horrors, a hat!! The entire meighborhood id in shock...they had no idea I owned anything other than golf shirts and shorts@ Even the cashier in the grocery made a smart-ass comment!

That is true....but we wouldn't have a yard sale in the cold weather either!! Sadly New Hampshire, Montana are out, and we will be pushing up daisies ( or whatever plant they have here) when the time comes.
If they started the damn thing at 9am, that would have been better...I wouldn't be such a grouch. Good thing you didn't hear me holler at an a**hole who was peeking under the tarps at 7.15!! It was fun though,.

Only problem is it would cost an arm and a leg to ship the durned thing and you would absolutely SWIM in it. You have to wear about 37 layers of sweaters to get big enough to fit -- LOLOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^<
I believe you - IIRC you wore pants or jeans when we met for lunch in MD a few years ago.. I'm a cold weather person myself, just within limits. Don't think anyone is happy in the so cold your face freezes in 2 seconds, however.
Glad it's warming up down there. Don't shock the neighbors, too much!

By any measure I've found, Ottawa is not second, but ranges from third (lowest recorded temperature) to seventh (average winter temperatures).

Yeah, what about Rejkavik (sp?) and Moscow, and the Scandinavian capitals? We used to be friends with one of our Russian hockey players - great guy (Andrei Nikolishin). Andrei grew up in the part of Russia that is above the arctic circle - said basically there was nothing to do but play hockey, and they really did skate around his village.

Again, it depends on how one measures it (coldest days versus average annual temperature) but either way Ulaan-Baatar ranks number one. If one is measuring coldest days, Moscow is second and Ottawa third. By average temp, it appears to be as follows:

I must admit I am going on hearsay. Just about ever since I have lived in Ottawa (1953), I have heard that only Ulan Bator, in Outer Mongolia is colder than Ottawa. Certainly places like Rejkavik and Moscow dont come anywhere close. The Scandanavian capitals are heated by the warm Atlantic Gulf Stream. Precisely how this is supposed to be measured, I dont know. One of my cousins (mining engineer) was in Ulan Baatar (unusual way to spell it) for a couple of years and he commented that it was brutal in winter. He had lived Ottawa and Saskatoon way and clearly didn't think they compared.
