Questions Re: Needlelace

I have a pattern I want to try in needlelace. I have only done two other needlelace projects before this, one was a bookmark (very simple) and one was a reticello square. This is completely different, it's a butterfly that has a second set of wings to attach later. I've laid my mylar over the pattern and poked holes all around the body and outer wings and the inner framework of the wings. My pattern came from overseas and there are no instructions per se. They seem to be assuming I know what I'm doing (LOL!), so there's no "step-by-step".

My first question is this: When I'm running the "foundation" thread around the edges and tacking it down to the mylar, do I include the bars in between the "foundation" (in the foundation/tacking) or do I lay the foundation for the bars and buttonhole or wrap over them as I go when doing the other actual "lacing patterns"? Don't know if this makes sense, trying to simplify: Do I lay lines down for _all_ the lines that will eventually be stitched over or do I just do the skeletal framework?

Second question: Do I lay the wire down with the foundation lines or work it in after I'm done?

Please feel free to clarify what I think I'm saying - I appreciate any and all suggestions!

The most knowledgable person I know regarding lace is a woman named Karen Bovard from Omaha. She's a fellow CATS instructor (teaches classes in lace), and LOVES to find lacemakers.

You can find her email address through the CATS site:

She's a very busy lady, but my guess isthat she'll be willing to try and help you out.Phyllis Maurer

I've only watched as others prepare their needlelace, but an international prize winner among our group always lays in ALL foundations before she begins any fillings. I can't say I recall her wiring anything, but it seems logical to me that the wire should be in the foundation too.

I adore needlelace though have not had time to do any as yet - it allows a lot of individual expression.
