SAL Choice of Chart

I've not been participating in the discussion, but having looked at all the choices. I'll add a fifth vote to Winter Wind (although either of the others would be great, too).

Good. Sue said she would like to be part of the group too. She said whatever was chosen would be fine with her.

For those who might be concerned about saving money, I wonder if new DMC Color Variations, which comes in both Perle and 6 Strand Floss, could be substituted? It's a lot cheaper then the Caron Waterlilies and Watercolors??

The colors aren't bad either.

Yes, that would be a great way to go for those who don't have/can't get Caron easily.

I'm jumping out of lurkdom to join in. I think I'd like to try this. Haven't done anything but xs for years...and haven't tried anything on canvas ever. So.....this feels like a good time to try. As for my vote... Winter Wind then Summer Breeze, then the others in any order but any choice would be fine. My mom did canvas work for years but I never seemed to pick it up.

I'm tentatively thinking of joining in - it may get me properly back into stitching. I haven't looked at Winter Wind or Summer Breeze, so where do I see them? If they're stitched with variegated perle, I could probably substitute with local threads.

I would love to do some special stitches. My previous canvas work has been only tent stitch on penelope with wool.

Thanks, Lucille. I see I'll have to use coarse evenweave, as canvas is only in the usual dark beige colour, and it shows. I do have some in white - must count the threads. Winter winds seems the best, but maybe not quite so blue!

As long as the fibers are pretty much limited to a Caron Watercolour and pearle cottons to match, I'm seriously considering joining along. I have two big projects I need to get done and this sounds like it would be a nice "in between" project for when I don't feel like working on the more comlicated ones on smaller count fabric. :-))) I like Winter Wind but will also work on any of them if I already have most of the supplies. Since I didn't get the police department job I interviewed for, I anticipate plenty of free time while I wait for the "perfect for me" job to open up. I know it's out there, I just need to be in the right place at the right time when it shows up. :-) After all, there are a gazillion others out there who may think that it is their perfect job too.! :-) Liz from Humbug

I'd like to jump in too. I've not done canvas work before. My preference would be Summer Flower Boxes, but would happily stitch whatever the group decides upon.

I'm coming into this late but would love to play. If still taking votes for a chart I like Winter Wind. I love the look of the stitches it uses!

Also Ellice if your friend's shop will do up kits for which ever design is chosen I'd like to get one to include canvas and threads.

Hi all,

Just a note - after our lovely day at Woodlawn, Donna & I looked over the charts back at her house. We're unified in thinking that the "Summer Flower Boxes" may be best, given the varied experience for all of you, and our first try at a canvas SAL, etc.

It's a good size, and we have a couple of ideas to pass on. This one would take a watercolours, 3 skeins of coordinated Perle cotton, and a ribbon - which we'd substitute a Petite Sparkle Rays in lieu of the Ribbon floss. Better to work with, and will look really nice.

Also, due to the open canvas background - it will be much better to have them stitched on coordinated canvas color as opposed to white (this goes for any) - of course depending on the color. The piece is 4.25", and though Laura suggests 6" stretchers/piece, I'd say go to 7" - which leaves room to play a bit in the margin to try something..

I have at least 10 colorways worked up that are based on coordinating with Watercolours, and once Cheryl has the list, I'll send out a bunch of selections, and links to Caron so you can see the color (their site has pix of all the Watercolours). The thing is, coordinating the ribbon with the perles, etc.

Anyhow, Cheryl - coordinate away - I'm going to go have dinner right now!

This will be lots of fun.

Watercolours isn't very expensive - about $3-$3.50 a skein depending on where you get it - retail. You could sub, though IMHO, the variations in the DMC are much more abrupt than with Watercolours. I would stay away from floss - for these to look right on canvas you'd have to use at least 4 plies, and a laying tool. With the Watercolours & Perle, no laying tool, just making sure you let it retwist, and don't fuzz up by using huge lengths when not appropriate. I don't think any of these charts called for Waterlilies- which is about $6-$7 a skein. Also, Crescent and WDW both make overdyed Perle. However, they tend to have very subtle variation. In these designs, part of the reason Watercolours works so well is that you can find a mid-tone, a bright, an accent to pull from.

Absolutely, will be able to do kits, which will be discounted, and send them out. I guess this will get more discussion, and formalized on the yahoo group.

FWIW, I think once people are set I should be able to get stuff mailed out quickly - priority takes about 2 days, otherwise a few for 1st class.

I think this will be good fun - and I hate for folks to worry much about supplies - putting cart before the horse so to speak. Though our crew outside of NA will be best served getting their stuff locally, I think. But, it really doesn't cost much for us to mail to Oz or the UK.

I'd like to join, too! I've been gone the past week and am just now catching up. Summer Flower Boxes looks like fun...is there a "real" picture of it anywhere?

No completed picture, though I'll probably finish it within the next 2 days

- depending on what I've got going.

Go to the Yahoo group - and sign up. I think it's RCTN_Canvas_SAL or something like that. Cheryl is the moderator.

Happy to have you.
