Should I wash it before

I pulled out a long time WIP and it is nearly finished. I have a few more stitches in the DMC before I start doing some work with some Needle Necessities floss. I think the piece is kind of dirty and will want to wash it when I'm done. But I am better off washing before stitching the NN?

And Wednesday, I'll hit the bead store for dragonflies or ladybugs to replace rabbits.

I would wash it first.

I think I remember hearing that NN has a tendency to run. You might want to wash your WIP before starting on the NN and then hopefully not have to wash again once completed. I usually gently rinse any overdyed fibers before I stitch with them unless they **specifically** say they are color-fast. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Do you just rinse them in cool water, or do you also add a bit of mild soap? I've seen floss with both sets of instructions, and I'm wondering what the best method is.

I always add some Orvus.

Louisa I can get smaller pots of Orvus for you from our Guild, the price is beneficial and it is useful for many other delicate things.

I have a huge ( 120 oz) jug of Orvus. I would be happy to send you some. I can get the screwtop containers ( Rubbermaid) at Dollar General, which should be enough to last you for a while.

If anyone is interested, email me at gillmurray1 at verizon dot net. I have more than I can ever use...I bought it at the Farm store, we are a horse country, and it is used for that, believe it or not!

Gillian, you just beat me to it. One of the gals in our local guild buys it by the gallon jug, very reasonably priced, at the Feed Store and uses it for all her laundry. It is actually horse shampoo, and is promoted as being ph balanced. She figures if it is good for show horses, it is good for her personal laundry.

(p.s. if this is very late appearing, blame my isp. The messages I have posted here, on rcty and on alt. sewing on Monday morning have not yet appeared by 8:30 p.m. Tuesday)

It depends on how much the color from the floss runs. Regardless, I always end up soaking the floss for just a bit i a little vinegar water It helps to set the color. If you do this, just remember to rinse the floss VERY well to make sure you get all of the vinegar out! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I got mine at the local Blue Seal - works a treat for all sorts of things that need a gentle wash. C

That's what our Guild decided to do and one of our members is a pharmacist, so the rest was easy. Nobody has found a source of smaller containers at the retail level.

Are you looking for empty containers? C

I was in our local Dollar General, and found this package of four wide-top, screwcap containers made for carrying fruit salad, jello etc in picnics, lunchboxes etc. They are made by Rubbermaid, and cost me $2. I threw out the packaging yesterday, but would guestimate they hold about 8-10 fluid ounces.

Perfect for Orvus, because when it is in a jelly-like form, I just dip a couple of fingers in, and slosh around whatever stuck to the fingers into the rinse water.

I suspect Rubbermaid brand is available in Canada, and you might even find them in one of your discount places.

I paid $19.95 for my gallon jar of Orvus. I used to pay about 3.95 for a small container when Joann's used to carry it. I haven't seen it on the retail market for some years.

You *can* buy smaller containers of it in most any quilt shop. Problem is, it's VERY $$$. It's called "Quilt Wash" and costs in the neighborhood of $8.00 for about 4 oz. Janet and I went halfsies on the gallon jug -- from the local feed & tack store -- when I first moved here nine years ago and I think we paid about $22.00 including the tax. I've been sharing mine out with my needlework group friends ever since and I still have scads of it left. I save old pill bottles and put the Orvus in that when I share with my friends. HMMMM, our local PetSmart carries it now as do most PetSmarts that have horse supplies. IIRC, you can get a quart bottle of it but don't hold me to that. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

No, we have plenty - I meant to say (badly) one can't (around here anyway) buy Orvus in small containers, it's always a gallon jug.
