Sorry! Last post from Jaenne.com

I have been posting freebie updates in this newsgroup because several members in this group have requested I do so. I have now been accused of spamming in this newsgroup, and I am extremely sorry if that is the way you have viewed my postings.

Effective immediate, I will not be posting anything for my website to this or any other newsgroup. I was trying to build up visitors to the site to eventually benefit the Angel Quilt Project in getting more volunteers. I had to pay for a subscription to access your newsgroup because AOL no longer provides access to newsgroups. I will cancel my subscription immediately. I hope I have not imposed on any of you, and again I am sorry.

Aw, that's too bad. I personally don't think offering to give away free stuff is spamming and I enjoyed looking at the designs.

I hope you reconsider.

That's a shame, Jaenne. I've enjoyed looking at your patterns. Have not downloaded as yet but i imagine I will at some point.

I'll bookmark your site for sure. Spam to me is the unending crud that comes into my email box - usenet newsgroups are fair game for these sorts of things and especially since you are offering free downloads (regardless of the fact that you ask for donations) i have a hard time categorizing that as spam. On my other hobby group people post sales and auctions of pens and inks all the time. It's expected.

oh well. :(

take care and best wishes. kcat

I, for one, am very annoyed with whoever told you that you were spamming. I hope you will reconsider, and I hope whoever wrote to you will own up so we know who the b*st*rd was. I am afraid there are a lot of rctners who somehow think that any vague hint of advertizing must be absolutely condemned. Nobody to my knowledge, has ever been able to make a clear distinction between passing useful information and advertizing or spamming or whatever. As I have suggested many times in the past; if you see a post you dont like, please ignore it and pass to the next message. There are lots of other people who enjoy these sorts of posts. So whoever accused Jaenne, please 'fess up so we know who you are. And I suggest Jaenne, that if no-one 'fesses up, which I am sure is what will happen, you continue posting. HTH.

Why should that person 'fess up? Are you going to spank them? Surely people are allowed to both hold and express different opinions than yours?

It doesn't happen to be me, but I imagine that if you examined Kathy Dyers site you would find that advertising in any shape or form on a discussion group is OUT. What else would rctmarketplace be for ?

I believe it's long been accepted that if a designer contributes to general discussions, then the occasional announcements of upcoming designs and website updates were accepted or at least tolerated.

That said, weekly announcements of updates, without any other posts of any form do seem much more like advertising then they do helpful contributions.

JMHO!

SInce when did offering FREE patterns become marketing?

I object to people acting as rctn "police" *privately*. If they want to do this sort of thing, let them do it in public. I have absolutely no objection to people having opinions different from mine; I enjoy a good discussion and debate; in public. As to why I want to know who did it, the reason is simple. In the past we have lost many, many delightful people because one or a few rcnters said nasty things about them. I would much rather this did not happen so often. If we know who the trouble maker is, maybe we can let them know that many of us object to people acting as "rctn police". Clear?

If you read what I said, you would not ask this question. There is

*NO* clear definition of what is advertizing and what is passing useful information. As I have noted *many* times, the only people who I have *ever* seen advertizing are strangers who abuse our hospitality. I have rarely seen any true rctner abuse the newsgroup by what I call blatant advertizing.

I think that you can let them know that without knowing who they are. Demanding to know who they are smacks of misplaced authority to me.

Any repeated (on a weekly basis) request to visit a website can easily be viewed as marketing.

The website in question also does ask for people to donate money on a voluntary basis if they download a chart, making it resemble marketing all the more.

And I've never seen any messages from this poster contributing to any other discussions. Not here, not on AOL, not on the EZ Board that was being inundated. No, there's no requirement that everyone who reads any message board must contribute to discussions at hand, but when the only time you see a certain name is attached to, for lack of a better term, self-promotion, it does leave a certain flavor.

And I can't even come up with a coherent and mature response to Jim's demand that "somebody fess up", which was the real reason that I intended to post to this thread in the first place.

I said that would be my last post and I meant it. Caryn was the catalyst for this decision and I really do not wish to have any further encounters with her. I do not ask people to donate for downloading a chart. I have spend thousands of my own dollars to keep this site up so the Angel Quilt Project part of it available to stitchers worldwide, even after I was widowed and could barely afford to exist. I am not by any means wealthy from this site. The donation button is there to contribute to the costs of the site, if anyone wants to. Any excess would be shifted to the AQP.

What I am wealthy from is the friends I have made connected to this site. I have the sweetest mother in the world because of this site. She adopted me after we found out how much we have in common through e-mails. I have met people all over the world, and most of them I don't think have ever paid me a half penny for the patterns I did for them. I am on the board of directors for the Angel Quilt Project because James Farmer saw my site and asked me for help, which I gladly gave.

Actually, I should thank you, Caryn, for reminding me of what I have to be thankful for. Thank you.

I find it fascinating that people jump up and down over a free needlework site, yet we have someone who posts here about her assorted novels and book tours - overt marketing, IMO - without any hassles whatsoever.

I'm sorry Jaenne. I read the newsgroup, although I rarely post for reasons I don't need to go into here. I enjoyed your free designs and will visit your website directly instead of through rctn.

LOL! Well the book tour lady gets the occasional hassle about that from me, nice as she is! It wasn`t me who complained about the site under discussion either, but it does rankle a tiny bit that money is mentioned at all if it`s first "sold" as a free download site.

As I recall, apart from the occasional mention of a new design or an update, advertising on here should be limited to a link in the signature.

As others have said, frequent mention of a site with "Free downloads but donations appreciated" and no other post IS taking advantage!
