I never once said "Free downloads but donations appreciated." Never at any time. I was invited by an active member of this newsgroup to post freebie notices. I did not come to this newsgroup univited. I will not post anything more even mentioning I have a site. I will not even put a connection to my website in the signature for my post, which many on this newsgroup do, and in great detail. Once the issue was raised about "spamming," I acted immediately and took a corrective measure. Can I get some credit for that? In the past 24 hours:

  1. I have been accused of deliberate spamming.
  2. Had the pleasure of reading insults about the contents of my site.
  3. Accused of innudating the EZ Board with spam, which I had never heard of before now, nor have I ever posted to.
  4. Trying to extort money by the mere fact I have a donation button on the site, which was never mentioned in any newsgroup or message board post.

Good God! What on earth can I do to satisfy some of you?

You haven`t half posted a lot since your "Last Post!"

It is very difficult to hold this sort of discussion when I am misquoted. I *never* demanded to know who attacked Jaenne; I suggested they should identify themselves.

-- Jim Cripwell. A volante tribe of bards on earth are found,/ who, while the flattering zephyrs round them play,/ on "coignes of vantage" build their nests of clay;/ how quickly from that aery hold unbound,/ dust for oblivion!/ To the solid ground/ of nature trusts the mind that builds for aye. Wordsworth.

Apparently I am the culprit. I know I said, over on AOL boards, "I have come to regard Jaenne as the worst sort of spammer." I didn't say it on RCTN tho, AOL is more of a tight knit family of posters than RCTN is.

I found emerald's comments about our resident author amusing, because I see posts complaining about her more as often as I do ones encouraging her.

It's a typical case of people seeing things differently in both cases.

Jaenne never contributed anything here or on AOL except the weekly "come to my site" spams. Her site does have that "donations" button on each and every page showing a chart to download.

Her defense about it all being about the Angel Quilt Project surprised me, because I didn't remember it being a prominent element of her website. It might be there, but I honestly don't remember it (but you know, my memory isn't as good as it could be either! lol).

Jaenne could try to post about other things here, put the link to her site in her sig. Lots of people do that, and it's considered to be perfectly fine. Whoever invited her here should have told her the etiquette, maybe that person should be the one asked to "fess up" in Jim's words.

Ok, you suggested. I still think it's silly. Does it help you any to know that it was Caryn who did it? I wouldn't think so.

Elizabeth

You are quite right. It does not help me to know Caryn did it. But what I hope is that if Caryn knows that I, and many other rctners, know that she did it, and we dont like it, maybe, just maybe, next time she will think twice, and then not hit the send button.

Our lives are completely surrounded by advertising, everywhere we look and breathe. I vote for keeping this free, entirely free, of any form of advertising for whatever. It's like a haven in the midst of a storm of advertising.

I can live with sig lines, they require nothing of me.

Interesting game. What if Caryn knows that I and Lucretia and many other rctners know that she did it and that we would possibly do the same thing because we hate advertisements (although we do tolerate them from regulars)? Does she let herself be influence by those she respects most? Does she try to figure out which group is bigger? After all, treatement of spammers and other advertisers is far from being an issue dominated by consenus on this group. So in the end, whether you know who did it or not, she's back to keeping her own counsel, isn't she?

Elizabeth

OTOH, multiple OT posts about politics and religion are perfectly okay?

this is why i restrict my activity on Usenet and prefer web forums that are moderated. I really have nothing against the OT posts - just the inconsistency (as I see) as to what is appropriate and what is not.

What if Caryn is just Caryn, thinking for herself, speaking for herself, and dealing with the fallout as always?

Personally, knowing I upset Jim is more likely to make me repeat the behavior, because he has repetively irritated and angered me over the years.

But I said what I said on AOL, so blaming me publicly here was sorta tacky! lol

Caryn

Actually, I offered you a way to continue to advertise your site and not get the criticisms you so objected to!

Post to this group, talk to us, discuss stitching, join in the ongoing conversations. Put your info in your sig.

If not, fine, but don't keep blaming me.

Caryn

They are clearly marked OT, are a part of natural discussion amongst stitchers in a 'live' group and are not advertising. I think you are comparing apples and oranges.

So, you make your choice, moderated. As to what is appropriate as to subject matter well that is a whole can of other worms.

both seem to bring out some pretty nasty attitudes. So I don't think it's apples and oranges, nope. OT about cooking? fine. OT which turns into flaming and rudeness, not fine. But as you said, that's why I do make that choice (moderated forums) typically. I keep *trying* usenet, and keep getting disappointed for the most part. I have run into threads that sound just fine here - but open them and find someone flaming someone or making accusations or delighting in "upsetting" someone else as retribution.

I have been on Usenet and the 'net in general of almost 10 years so it's not like I don't know this happens and haven't adjusted to it in a major way. I know it's impossible to predict if a thread that seems innnocent will turn into a battle.

Doesn't mean that I have to keep my mouth shut about it just because I'm new to this particular group.

one thing you seem to think I'm saying is that i'm writing off rctn because of this issue. I'm not. I prefer moderated groups where I can find them. When I can't, I'll sift through the fluff and drivvel (never know how to spell that) as much as I can.

I do need to work on who to killfile though. I'm still learning that.

That`s just splitting hairs, Jim.

Pat P.

uhmm... maybe I'm missing something I don't know about but the following is a site.

KCat - who will now attach her sig which has her site included.

People are pretty good on rctn about marking OT on their threads so non stitching stuff can be readily avoided.

There is some flaming here, though it is mild compared to other groups. You definitely do not have to keep your mouth shut, don't know where you came by that idea! I have only killfiled once, on another group, and then only for a short while. You can see who the poster is, so just avoid those posts.

It is interesting to note, that when I attend my Guild's stitchin on Tuesdays conversation is general. If someone has a stitching query or problem, we all put our two cents in with ideas. Other than that, anything is up for grabs for discussion. That is how I have always found stitching groups and I think rctn reflects that but just happens to be on usenet. On Tuesdays, after a good, often spirited discussion, most of us then take off to go to lunch together. There are no continuing ill feelings.

I don't believe it is possible to only discuss stitching, if we did, there would be long silences.
