Teddy Bear Gathering

I saw a teddy bear cross-stitch in a shop once that has stayed in my head ever since - the colours were so vibrant, and the whole thing was alive!! (Okay, as alive as teddy bears can get!) They only sold it as a kit, and it was very expensive. All I want is the chart, and after about 2 hours of surfing last night I only found kits available.

I did email the company that does them, but haven't had a response yet, so was wondering if anyone here could help. There is a chart available on ebay, but it says 'created with DMC software', so I have a feeling it's imitation, and I'm not sure if the colours would be the same.

:-)

Catherine, the name of the pattern or designer would be helpful, or at least a good description of *this* teddy-bear, seeing as how there are

*tons* of patterns for them! :) Or maybe the link to the ebay site to get a look at it.

The bear was designed by Doug somebody (diesn't help, I know) and distributed by Dimensions, and is part of their Gold collection. The actual name if the design is Teddy Bear Gathering. :-)

I received an email back from the supplier saying they only do kits, not charts (ever seen a kit without a chart?) so I've hit a dead end there.

When your production/distribution system is set up to do kits, doing just the chart is a lot of work. Often the chart needs to be re-formatted to match the form factor of chart racks, etc. Many companies which do kits have a separate division that produces charts of some of their kits.

Dimensions does, sometimes, offer occasional charts. Even in their Gold Series. Teddy Bear Gathering, however, doesn't seem to be one of them.

There are a couple of charts only on Ebay; also one kit that may work out cheap. I went to the site below, and then I then put in a search for Teddy Bear Gathering and came up with these items.

Hope this may help.

I've spent the week drooling over the charts and the kits of the Teddy Bear Gathering. I saw the chart only, but was reluctant to bid as it said it had been generated on a computer using DMC software and I wasn't sure what this implied. Eventually I succumbed and put in a bid, but was outbid at about $7 (or so), and a few minuted after the auction was over I received an email asking if I'd like to buy one at the price I'd bid, and now I see the same person has put another chart up for auction.

So this brings me to ask a question of ethics. I have no way of knowing if this person has permission to reproduce these charts, and if it's computer generated, does this means they scan in a photo of the embroidery and work from there? If it's a scanned reproduction then the likelihood that it will have the exact colours is very slim, which loses all its appeal for me, as the original I saw was one of the most striking embroideries I've ever seen once made up.

And if she's got an original and has worked out the colours accurately surely she doesn't have the right to make money out of generating as many as she likes and selling them on eBay? Where does one stand on used charts? If someone does a kit and still has a chart, may that chart be used again if it's not for profit? Eg - I buy a kit and then my mother does a replica from the chart using her won threads?

Needless to say, I haven't bid on the second chart, and have marked her as a dodgy seller in my mind. What do you think, particularly the designers amongst us?

Was she the original designer of the chart? In which case it`s certainly OK to print off more copies. I print my own myself. Otherwise she`s breaking the law if she`s coping someone else`s design.

The design is by Doug Knutson and is from a Gold Collection kit by Dimensions.
