Well, remember, I haven't lived at home in over 25 years, so it's possible (if not probable) they were discarded as the original owners died or went into nursing homes. If Mom was involved in the packing up, she might have saved them, but not all of the aunties' descendants have our appreciation of the handmade.

When one of our elderly relatives came to the US, her siblings combined creative efforts to send her off with a handmade portable letter-writing kit: folder to hold the stationery and a portable pen wiper, as I've described, a single sheet of felt with an embroidered backing, rather than a book of felts, so it would slip flat into the folder. The hint was clearly that none of them ever expected to ride on such a ship, or go to America, and she should write long letters describing everything for them. Not likely that she would use up a whole piece of felt in one trip, so wouldn't need multiple "pages" in a bulky book, and could wash or replace the felt once she arrived.
