WAAAY OT: ? for the stamp collectors

I have once again come to the fount of all knowledge, better known as rctn! :)

My DFIL had quite an extensive stamp collection and, as he's no longer able to work with it (he's in a nursing home), DH & I have ended up with it. There are *numerous* binders and *thousands* of loose stamps, domestic and foreign. DH has been sorting through them since last fall. He's currently going through the foreign ones and has become stumped. He just doesn't know where to turn (not knowing if stamp collecting companies will tell him the "truth") and has lots of questions.

I thought maybe someone here might know of a good newsgroup that he could sign up with to ask some of these questions. Anyone????

TIA!!!

My stamp collection has lain dormant lo these many decades.

Try searching for "philately" and see what comes up. Also, this is the sort of hobby that tends to have local clubs. If your public library has meeting rooms for that sort of thing, check the schedule. Our local newspaper, as bad as it is, publishes a whole insert of local clubs every year, also available on line, so that might be worth a quick check. I'll bop around Agent after I deliver DS to school and see if anything looks promissing.

Here in Ottawa, Canada, Dogs for the Blind uses the sale of stamps as a way of making money. They will not pay for a collection, such as you describe, but they can make us of it to raise money. I gave my stamp collection to them. Just a thought. Jim.

Looks like the place to start is with the American Philatelic Society. They list member dealers who have to sign on to a code of ethics.

had a similar situation, and my son has my FIL's stamps. Your question prompted me to look around, and Baltimore has a Philatelic Society that's been going for more than a centurey. Who knew? sue

Let me talk to DH - he's done stamps in the past and DD has started collecting. He should have some thoughts for you.

I've checked the local library and have calls in to the main PO in town and the newspaper (thinking they'd have info since they publish when clubs or groups meet).

Somewhere along the line we'll connect with someone, somehow! :)

That would be great, Cheryl, especially if he has any clues about foreign stamps!

Just catching up on a lot of posts.Been gone from mid-July...very occasionally access by Google.

Joan I have been a stamp collector since I was about 4 or 5 years old..in WW2 in England.

I probably can't help a lot, but email me at my home address. I have a cousin who is a philatelist in England.

I have reduced my collection from World-wide, to certain specific areas.

Colin may have some ideas.

Hugs

Gillian (missed my friends) but had a great time with Cheryl, Brat and Margarety. Ear your heart out!!

Thanks for the offer! I'll let DH know. OTOH, we went down to Minneapolis over the weekend. He'd found a dealer there and took a sample (read 2 large Rubbermaid tubs and a couple smaller ones) for them to look at. They gave him some good suggestions as to what to look for and we'll probably end up taking the rest of the collection down to them and have it sold on consignment in a few more weeks. It's sad, really, all the thousands of hours DFIL put into that collection, just to have to sell it to strangers. Collectors are becoming rarer and rarer.

Oh, I am, I am!!!!

That is good ( not just because you missed us).

My collection started in WW2...and that is how I learned a lot of geography, history etc.

I think that your DH has the right idea. Many of the older stamps are virtually worthless. However, there are a few that have value. Finding the right buyer for those is the big problem.

The really modern ones are churned out by tiny countries, who make money from their Mickey Mouse stamps.

IN the last ten years or so, I have bought some new sheets from the Post Office, and kept them in the right acid fast paper. They do make an increase in value. Whether there is even a US Dollar when I die....who the hell knows.

JIm and I are just wondering what to do with our small savings. We did buy a small amount of gold and silver....in case of the worst. I invest in stash, and he invests in ammo!!I just let a $4000 CD roll over...I was in NH. I got the paperwork today. It says 0.05%!!!!!!

Can you believe that????????

Hugs anyway frm a tired, but happy lady to be home. Just wish it was cooler though!!

Love

Gill
