What fibers would you use?

I love using specially fibers. So with that said I am working on Magical Night and pegasus horses. I want the wings to look better that just stitched wings. Would you use just metallics or maybe satin stitches or what would make them magical?

I'd be tempted to try beading them or perhaps to try some wisper or other feathery fiber - maybe a combination of things.

I once worked a little XS of Asterix the Gaul and wanted to make the wings on his hat look special somehow. I used three threads of white in my needle instead of the two I'd used for the remainder of the design and it was remarkable how 'feathery' the finished product came out.

I saw a bird worked in stumpwork recently and the stitcher had worked the near side wing on a separate piece of fabric and attached it so that it stuck out from the background. The effect was really stunning, but I've no idea how to achieve it, sorry. :-(

Or you could use rayon for shine or some of that neat hologram thread for an unusual effect. My DS has worked some little white unicorns and pegasuses with BF for effect. They turned out nicely, only I think white or silver BF would've worked better than the pale blue and lilac called for in the pattern.

Two strands of white pearl blending filament. Maybe a strand of silver hologram in with them. Floss optional.

ribbon floss or rayon with long/short or split stitches

cut or uncut turkey work to simulate feathers

from an EGA seminar I took: trace the shape onto lightweight fusible webbing, attach the webbing to shiny fabric, cut out shape, fuse to ground, couch fine braid around the edges

My first thought is to stitch the wings in rayon and then use just a bit of Wisper on the underside so that it looks like the down of a birds wings. When we all stitched The FireHouse Angel, a bit of Wisper was added to the underside of the wings right along the line of stitching that delineated the separate feather groups. Just the top half of each stitch was added (over top of the already completed cross stitch) using one strand of Wisper. Are any of the feathers really delineated in your design? If they are stitched so that they have an obvious feather shape, you might try using something like what -- off the top of my head -- I would call an alternating half cross stitch. It would look like this /\/\/\ instead of XXXXX. I guess this would be something like satin stitches, just, well, different -- LOL. In needlepoint and crewel work there are feather stitches that are a bit like what I am describing. If you used rayon and wanted even more shimmer, you could add a strand of Kreinik #032 blending filament and see how you like that. Just remember, you can "reverse stitch" anything and you would only be out a few lengths of fiber. PLEASE -- let us know what you decide to do and BE SURE to post photos for us!!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

If you want a fur look, you could try FurTaStitch. You sew with it in the usual way then brush it with a new toothbrush & what you have sewn becomes furry. It's excellent fun & adds a different texture. Made by Italyarns :

It behaves better than BF, so you won't swear nearly as much. When I'm making cording for Christmas ornaments, I slip a strand of hologram in, and it picks up a little bit of extra light to reflect. I generally use it just like BF, sometimes as an add-in, sometimes several strands together and no floss.

Now you see why that book isn't leaving my house! :)

What count fabric is this on? Not being a fan of blending filament - I'd try Rainbow Gallery Petite Treasure Braid, or Treasure Braid (the petite is a bit finer the Kr 4, but a braid). Or, you get your hands on some of the new Silk Lame' , which is a twist of silk with metallic braided in. There is also soft=sheen Fyre Werks - which is nice to work with - but a bit more like a ribbon. F you want a slightly more shimmery or wet - try the newish Crystal Braid.

Haven't seen their Hologram. But there is a hologram in Fyre Werks at RG.
