where to winter (on topic)

Fellow stitchers,

I fell on an icy driveway this winter and broke my leg. It's been a real bummer and I really never want to see ice again. I am looking for suggestions of somewhere to spend three to four months next winter where ice and snow won't be likely. AND I would like a place with a good needlepoint shop. I don't do cross stitch, but if there's no needlepoint store, a cross stitch store with a great selection of Kreinik, Needle Necessities, Rainbow Galleries and so forth would do. I'm open to suggestions from stitchers in ice-free climates. Thanks in advance.

They said "Californy's the place you oughta beeeeeeeeeeee"

As long as you stick to the outer 2/3 of the state (i.e., away from the Sierra Nevadas), the only ice you'll see is in the margaritas.

Sacramento no longer has a NP store, but

has canvas and a wide variety of fibers. You can also acquire some interesting needlepointable fibers at

and if you come to the SacIndieStitch meetings (join us at YahooGroups), I'm sure the girls would have some other yarn shop suggestions.

If you're willing to "see" ice, but walk through plowed parking lots, there are some interesting shops in Reno, which is a 2-hour drive from here (well, a little longer in ski season).

In fact, within a 2-3 hour radius of Sacramento, there are a number of LNSs, and the NP shop in San Francisco that I have never succeeded in finding. Next time, I'm taking the cell phone and letting them "talk me in". (OK, if I'm standing in front of Crystal's Crystals, which way do I go from here?)

We winter in Sun City West, AZ, but it is an age restricted community where one person has to be 55 or over. I am 10 minutes from a very complete LNS with more painted canvases than I have ever seen in another store. Phoenix also has several LNS and Tuscon also. There are rentals available in this area, also in Mesa, Scottsdale, etc. We have had temperatures in the 60s and 70s nearly all winter and no rain in over 115 days. The LNS is Needlers Nest in Surprise, AZ. Look up needlework shops on the web and go to the state and I found a listing of shops. We live in Minn 6 months a year and AZ 6 months and love it. Not here. Definitiely not here. We have windchills of minus 50-something today, the wind is polishing all the streets and parking lots to rink surfaces. I haven't heard whether North Dakota is sharing our good fortune---Joan, are you thawed enough to wave?? Dawne

Present and accounted for! And yes, we are sharing your "good" fortune. Right now (2:18pm) it's -6F(-22C), -28 (-33C) windchill, currently at 17mph. We have windchill advisories for after 9pm tonight, since the temps will keep dropping and the wind will pick up. yippee.

Useless fact #1 pertinent to today.....Fahrenheit and Celsius have the same temp at -40. Useless fact #2 pertinent to today.....the colder it is, the less slippery the ice.

Streets actually aren't very icy, since we've had a *much* warmer-than-normal January, which kept the roads clear. They won't ice over when it's this cold, either! There are *some* good things about really cold weather!!!! :)

Oh, and thanks, Dawne, for sending us this lovely reminder that we really do live in the north country!!!! LOL

Hej Karen, I knew you were from CA but just today found out you were from Sacramento. I live in Denmark now but lived in Sacramento from

7-19 years old. I was in the Fuzzy Penguin last summer and I agree it has a large selection of Products. Where did you go to school? PM me if you want to

If you're looking for a grand adventure, why not try Australia? It will be spring/summer down there and I'm sure some of our Aussie RCTNers could give you some tips on where to stay.

LOL! Yes, that's another good thing about our "cool" weather! And I'm making those Penguins last!

The joke from today's package: Q: What happens to sharks when they eat keys? A: They get lockjaw!

I think you ought to come to South Africa!!! I could put together a package for you. Make it a tour that focuses on Needlework and crafts.

I Catherine

I forgot to watch the Ebay auction of your tour. Would you mind sharing how it went?

I had two tours on auction... the second one I put on just before the first one finished. There were plenty of people who looked at both, and a few who marked them, but not a single bid.

I think people need to spend more time thinking about something as big as that, but I also think people are wary of paying money to someone new on the block (the Ebay block). I also have a disadvantage in that I'm having to advertise the tour in Dollars, whereas if I advertised in Rand I could take more of a chance with the price - I can't take the risk of making a loss because of exchange rate.

I can let you know when I put it up again (for the fun of it), but don't want to upset anyone who may think I'm spamming. When I told you all last time, I was excited at what I had done that it didn't occur to me that I might be advertising, and on of the other newsgroups there were some really upset people. It was most unpleasant!

It's hard to break into the Ebay scene with a high ticket item. Is there any way you could do some selling of smaller items, either your own or for someone else, so that you could build up some positive 'feedback'?

I enjoy hearing about interesting endeavors of fellow RCTNers and certainly didn't consider your post as spamming or advertising. As long as it's marked OT it's as welcomed as all the other discussions under that heading. Please let us know when you put it up again so we can track it.
