Winter hand care

What product works best for you? I dug out my tin of 'bag balm' a couple of days ago but it was too tasty for the cats and worse for my skin after they'd licked it off! They made short work of it too. I'd heard about 'Gloves in a Bottle' and searched out a retailer in my area (only 2 pharmacies carry it in Ottawa) otherwise I was going to order from the US. Anyway, I spoke with one of the pharmacists and asked her to hold a bottle for me - then, I called my sister and she picked it up for me. The pricing was good (same as in US which was a miracle!) and after the first use, my hands feel almost summerlike - the cats haven't come to the buffet either and that's a good thing. jennellh

My friend Ursula in Germany gave me a tube of wonderful Weleeda hand cream withh pommegranite. Something that is excellent hand cream, I don't react to, and doesn't bring me out in lumps. Oh, and doesn't act as a magnet for the moglings, like many smelly thing - including any and all Lush soaps!

I use Crabtree & Evelyn Lavender Body Lotion, which works well AND is the only thing I have found that neither the dog nor the cat finds tasty.

I use Cetaphil, the heavier cream when I go to bed every night and when I head out to work in the yard. It has made a really big difference. I have a hot wax machine I can dip my hands in if they get really bad but mostly I use that when my fingers are achy. Liquid skin is great if you are getting a crack in your fingers. I don't need that much any more though. I get the Cetaphil at Costco. Taria

Vanicream is a good hand cream; it's made locally, so we can find it all over; I'm not sure of availability elsewhere. According to their website, it is available in Canada under the name Cliniderm.

The question is not only what you use but that you do use it and when. The Eucerin people and the Lotil folks make fine products - but I use Mary Kay's 'satin hands' when I'm quilting. It absolutely disappears and I don't worry about getting my fabrics oiled or stained; smells to High Heaven IMHO but that goes away. Who decided that we must have a scent in everything? I won't be surprised if I open tomorrow's newspaper and my nose is assaulted by eau d' goat. Polly

Ha, my DS in No Va gave me some Dead Sea stuff too. Must be THE stuff for the young and hip, eh? My preference: the thick Eucerin Cream and AmLac. Both were recommended by a Dermatologist. Great for dry skin, especially in Winter. Yea! Pat in VA/USA

i just love two different lotions. for application during the day at my desk or sewing machine i love Perlier's lavender hand cream. i get it from QVC, and for after my shower i rely on Gold Bond body lotion. i get that at the local pharmacy. both absorb and heal and are reasonably priced.

handles it most days. Some times, tho', I have to tape a couple of fingers w/ band-aids until the skin softens up and the cracks close.

I was told that the stuff you put on cracked lips works wonderfully on cracked hands - just applied to the cracks.

I get deep cracks right at the place where my thumbnail corners meet thumb. Ouch. Sometimes they get so deep they bleed. I just put Neosporin into the crack and cover with a band aid. Usually works overnight. I use Neosporin for all the cracks I get on fingers and around my fingernails. I tend to get infections and that's not pretty at all, so the antibiotic knocks it out in nothing flat. Good stuff.

I use Bath & Body Works True Blue Spa Cuticle Treatment to heal the cracks & splits around my thumb nails. The little bitty jar costs $6 - $8 (can't remember exactly), but that little bitty jar lasts a long time and does a really good job! And, I love the way it smells.

Just discovered my favorite hand lotion (Baby Magic) is back on the market. They quit making it a couple years or so ago, but I found it at the store this week. I've loved that stuff ever since my oldest was a baby (53 years ago!).

Neosporin is good for that. Handling as much paper as I do at work [the concept management has of going paperless is a pie dream!] my hands get real dry.

At night I put on Avon Moisture Therapy cream and put heavy socks on my hands. If I wake up in the middle of the night I can play sock puppets. I keep a pump dispenser of a good lotion with me in the courtroom. Between that and the instant sanitizer, I am covered. Sometimes the judge uses the lotion also, so I make sure is is not frou-frou smelling.

Gloves worn on the way to work almost everyday of the year.

The Avon M.T. cream does that, too, overnight. Almost no smell and non-greasy, not sticky. I use the band-aids for cracked skin during the day if I'm working in the yard or painting walls (both make my finger skin very dry). ;-)

We are a bunch of handy quilters!

I use the store-brand version of Eucerin for my nighttime facial cream and my anytime hand cream. It is as protective as Vaseline but nowhere near as messy. It stays put. I have very fragile, sensitive skin, so a lifetime of experimentation has resulted in a vast preference for Eucerin-clones.
