Someone must really think I need to install this patch, as I've received over 1300 copies of it in email over the past week! :-)

Seriously, I hope everyone knows that this is the virus that has been floating around lately. No one should ever install ANY patches they receive in email. Always go to the manufacturer's website for patches.

Yes, quite possibly they are anxious for you to get _their_ version of the virus from them.

What I would like to know, however: Since we are all aware of this virus, as we were all aware of the sobigf and the other crap out there, WHY are our ISPs not filtering it out in THEIR servers, and passing it on to us instead?

I think a few hundred thousand flames to our ISP's customer service e-mails from "dissatisfied customers" might "open their blind corporate eyes"? Personally, I just forward them all to my customer service contact. Let them enjoy it too! No, it is not the "right" thing to do, or even the charitable thing. However, considering what I am paying them per month for the "privilege" of getting e-mail, I think they might do more to earn their money. Just my ranting $0.02. Wayne in Key West

Well, personally I'd rather not have my email censored in any way at all: no 'automated' filter can be 100% correct, and is likely to both let through suspect emails and filter out genuine emails. personally, I'd much rather take responsibility for maintaining the security of my own system. However, many people lack the knowledge and/or desire so to do, and that is, of course, what the distributors of viruses and hoax emails rely on.

Perhaps we should all have to sit a 'computer operating license' test before being allowed unfettered access to the internet, and ISPs should apply heavy filtering of both inbound and outbound emails (but what about ftp and other methods of file transmission) until we demonstrate our competence. Of curser, having a car driving license is no real guarantee that we operate our vehicles competently ....nor is having a marriage license any guarantee of matrimonial bliss .....

And of course, competence at mainining my system is no guarantee that I can operate a spell checker properly!

I thought "curser" was appropriate for the topic of computers. I actually thought that was funny and genius.

This new virus only attacks you if you have your "real" email address in the setup of you newsgroup software. So, if any of you have put your "real" email name, change it to a fake one or put some letters like "xxx" somewhere in your name. Those already affected will have to change their email name to something else with their isp until this thing dies down. It's more an autoresponder that roves the newsgroups looking for legitimate email address then sends you a neat little package disguised as a legitimate update from MS. That is where the damage is done. What every you do... don't open the email and if you do open it, don't launch the program.

Or in mailservers: the only place I have recently used my 'real' email address is Clayart: since then I have managed to enlarge my penis, cure my baldness and save $$$$ on my mortgage (even tho' it is in £££)!

Bah!

What gets to me about this type of spam is that it is blatently sexist. Its all aimed at us males. Never seems to be anything for the potteress's.

Howver on the serious side I have used the services of Trend Micro to clean out the last virus attack and last week used their on line service to re-check my system. The services are free

Not that it matters, and thankfully i can multitask. In the past week I've been offered 100s of cheap generic Viagra, no doubt to help stimulate the penis whose size I can increase by at least three inches while increasing my bust size without surgery, helping poor Nigerian widows collect miillions and simultaneously installing thousands of desperately needed patches on my system so that I can watch girls and donkeys, and underage (bodily fluid)sucking (epletive deleteds) Phew! And I thought LAST week was busy. I'm gonna need a secretary! Wayne in Key West
