Hi all I am new to using under glazes, just use to sculptural items with oxides. what I need is to achive a air brush and hand painted feel ,no glazes. but need it to be permenant (if thats how you spell it ) more like a hand painted picture . can I use just under glazes without a glaze on to clay bisk or green ware to give a total matt finnish

Sure. You can also use oxides or slips (with oxide for color).
I sometimes use underglaze without glazing it. However only where it is not going to be in contact with food. I use it on the outside of porcelain cylinders mostly which are glazed on the inside with a clear glaze. Because they are glazed on the inside and not on the outside it causes stresses at the rim which can cause cracks, I overcome this by making a bevelled edge and take the glaze onto this edge and carefully wax the outside. As Dkat says you can use underglaze, engobes, slips, oxides whatever will fire onto clay and just fire to the temp for that particular clay.

Amaco Velvet Underglazes airbrush very well (sieve to 200 mesh first), and work very well without glazing over as they contain a small amount of flux which *fixes* the colour. you only need to re-fire to Cone 06.
