If you think there's 2 months you're delusional. There's hardly one month.

*I* resist but lots of folks decorate their trees and start Christmas parties the Friday after Thanksgiving. Of course, this is as good a place as any to mention that the Annual Awful Christmas Joke event will be coming soon. =) Polly

No -- Friday after Thanksgiving is way too late. Christmas starts at 6:00 PM Thanksgiving evening. My inside isn't decorated but the outside is and the lights go on at 6:00 PM -- lights, snowmen, reindeer, Santa with sleigh, inflatable Christmas Tree, inflatable snow globe the

8 foot tall inflatable Toy Soldiers that flank the driveway entrance. This is in addition to the 3 foot tall candy canes that line the driveway and the walkway up to the front door from which strings of clear twinkle lights are strung :-). It will be the following Friday or Saturday before I go out and put the lighted garland on the front porch, decorate the front door and rocking chairs, fill the little wagons on either side of the door with pine & holly and poinsettias, etc. Of course, the artificial white tree that stands in the front living room window will be ready for lighting and display on Thanksgiving evening along with the lighted white pine garland that trims the window, arched living room entry and inside the front door. And that's just the quick and EASY stuff -- LOLOL!

I love the American tradition of the Christmas season starting at Thanksgiving. Our Thanksgiving is in October, so that plan doesn't work here. But I keep in sync with my American friends, pretty much, by putting the tree up by the first Sunday in Advent, around Dec 1.

I was in San Francisco one year about this time of October and went to a Christmas Store in Pacifica. The owner was going to decorate someone's tree that night! Now that's early!

Looking forward to the joy, very much, this year.

Sorry, I agree w/ Butterfly and Polly. Xmas here doesn't happen until about 2 weeks prior to Christmas - depending on weather for outside stuff. Xmas tree usually goes up the weekend before Xmas depending on timing. We do a 'holiday' open house the Friday before Christmas so the tree needs to be up & decorated for that. Anyone here in the neighborhood is more than welcome. As DH says, no one is invited - all are welcome. DH & I are balloon pilots/captains in the NY Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade so we are toast on Thanksgiving. No decorating then. We're lucky we don't fall asleep in the mashed potatoes at our freinds house that afternoon for dinner!

YEs, Ma, I know...and between now and then the following must be accomplished (at least in my house):

2 day craft fair, 2 quilts for a friend's children and bumper pads, dust ruffle for the littlest of her children - need to verify that she still needs/wants these, go through the lists *my* children made and see what we will actually be getting them, and order everything, get things organized for Thanksgiving - we are having DDs boxing coach over as he also moved here with no family to share holidays with, clean the workroom and prioritize projects for next year, figure out what to get DH for Christmas, drop not-so-subtle hints about what I want for my birthday figure out how to be surprised if they actually manage to do anything for my birthday get through various end-of-the-year doc appointments.......

So, Christmas isn't really taking too much of my thinking time right now...I'll gladly hand over some of my responsibilities to someone else if anyone wants to step up and volunteer.......

You'd think if they're going to do that, they'd at least start a trend of Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus costumes for Halloween :)

Yes, it is a shame that the "old" holidays are now blackholed. As my daughter is Pagan, we still celebrate a few. Michaelmas, Samhein, Summer Solstice, etc. as well as some traditional ones; Flag day, Columbus day, Grandparents day. you get the picture. Christmas is more commercial than religious around here, even tho we both like midnight candlelight Mass. Easter is not a biggy here either, but i really love Palm Sunday and the Passion reading, and of course, Thanksgiving is our biggest holiday. This year we hope to have reservations at a local Castle for dinner. It's supposed to be haunted. I know, we're weird. LOL
