What a beautiful room for a quilt exhibition. You could really stand back and see each quilt properly.

I went to Chilford today and you just couldn't get far enough back to get a good view which was a pity as there were some beautiful quilts including a lot of large ones that you couldn't really get the full effect from.

Very crowded too, but I was there when it opened so was able to get the shopping in first before it got too bad. I bought much needed thread, a Suffolk Puff (Yoyo) maker that I'd rather scorned until I saw the demonstration and the perfectly pleated results - far neater than my efforts. I also got a pattern for a small bag and the fabrics for it from the Oakshott(?) stand. They are cotton but look like shot silk, and I'd seen their adverts in Quilting mags. but never seen the actual fabric before. Its stunning. I even found a matching button for it from the Button Lady!

Also bought an instruction booklet for turning a hessian bag from Tescos into a beautiful quilted shopping bag, and fell for the packs of fabric for it - all couturier fabrics - embroidered, sequinned, lace, silk etc. and very opulent, and only £4 for a bag of 14 pieces of assorted sizes. I have a feeling I'll be doing several of these - may be an idea for Christmas 2010. I like to put the family's presents in some kind of container - this year it is the brightly coloured plastic garden trug things. I was given one last year, and it is so useful.

Now I must use the thread to complete quilting my UFOs before I start on the bags. I'll have to be very strong willed!!

This is amazing! I went to the Autumn Fair in Malvern a week ago. I, too, bought thread (long needed!); *and I bought a stack of Oakshott fabrics - and I haven't seen them at a show before. I was at the show with a dear 'enabler'!! As some of you know I buy for projects (virtually always) and had gone off one of the sets I had. It was suggested that, as I loved the Oakshott fabrics I should replace the unwanted with the wanted >ggget a good view which was a pity as there were some beautiful quilts

Pat, I've used thread basting and machine quilting together in the past, and I have a hint that may help your situation. Instead of waiting until the end to take out the basting, just clip any basting threads you'll be crossing just as you get to them. Eventually, you'll be able to pull out entire lengths of thread (some short, some longer), and most -- if not all -- of the basting will be gone by the time you finish the quilting. On top of that, there won't be any basting caught in the quilting. HTH. :)

The venue is the art museum at the SUNY campus at Binghamton, NY. It's lovely to see those quilts displayed as art, isn't it? This gallery is very similar to the SUNY Albany museum where my son got his MFA degree in sculpture. It's nice to get the feel of the entire exhibition with the openness of of the gallery.

Thanks for the tips Sandy. I'll have a go, but because it was machine basted, the stitches are fairly small and are locked back and front - like ordinary seam sewing, just that the stitches are a lot longer - perhaps one inch long.
