Bits and Pieces (lots of little stories)

It's been a sleepy day. I never did make it to bed last night, so I've slept most of today. Poor Manda is recovering from a sinus infection, so she slept all day, too. Bob worked and then went to many, many yard sales, and came home with two paintings: one a lovely painting of a family in a sled going to through the snowy woods, and another of a train in the mountains. He's a happy pup, and has been holding the paintings up all over the house to see where they might look best.

---------------- Sophie surprised me once again. I has strawberries and yogurt for supper (one of my favorites), and Sophie was begging her beanie little head off. So, I offered her a strawberry to shut her up. Obviously, Bob wasn't home, or there would have been an unpleasant scene about giving into Sophie begging. Of course, he's the man who feeds birds against my will.

Joke's on me, once again. Sophie ate the strawberry like it was filet mignon. I gave her a small bowl of strawberries and yogurt (I was full, anyway), and she is enjoying it immensely.

(Manda just discovered that dogs like pumpernickel, too)

----------------- As proof that Manda is growing up way too fast, she brought home paperwork for a field trip. In February. To Spain. Without a parent. Last year, the honors kids went to Italy (Manda is bummed that she missed that trip) and one girl bought a $350 purse in Milan. I am not upset Manda missed that trip, and have already threatened a certain child with death if she spends that kind of money on a purse or if she drinks any alcohol. (Some kids got hammered last year, too)

She can't wait. She's talking about it nonstop, and even offered to pay for the trip herself. (Of course not) Surprisingly, all the kids who have been invited to go are girls. I wondered how the teachers knew the personalities of these kids after only two weeks of school. Then I found out that each teacher from middle school wrote a letter about each of their honors and advanced students (maybe all the kids, I don't know), introducing them to their new teachers.

The math teacher at the high school made a copy of Manda's letter and sent it home. I want to back to the middle school and give the math teacher a big hug: he got her personality down cold, and really gave the teacher a good feel about her math skills. I asked, and only the middle school Amanda attended sent such letters.

------------------------ I am nearly done with Mary's (Meihjana's) bridal headpiece. Like many of my pieces, it's taking a lot longer than I had anticipated, but I think that the piece will end up as an heirloom. As with my other big pieces, I used the very best materials I could find. Real silk, Swarovski (from Latrinka), pearls, good stuff all around.

Boy, I hope she likes it.

------------------------- We invented a new word the other day. Bob was away for three days for a trade show, and the weather was very warm. Unbeknownst to Manda and me, Bob had used the George Foreman grill to make burgers before he left. However, he hadn't cleaned out the drip tray and the warm weather caused the meat juices to go bad and get oogy. (Enough to make me vegetarian, I'll tell you!)

I smelled something horrible in the kitchen and tracked down the smell. As I cleaned the stinky tray, Manda and I coined our new word: "Fungdungtious." (Fung'-Dung-Shus) It suits the vomitrocious stench coming out that tray. We've decided that Sophie is fundungctious most of the time, too.

------------------------ Tomorrow I am going to be able to do a home study for Cairn Terrier rescue, for the first time in many years. I had to quit doing a lot of volunteer work for Cairn rescue when I got so sick, but I was recently begged to do this home study - the rescue organization had been looking for a person in my home town.

Turns out the place is less than half a mile away, and across the street from Manda's old middle school. It'll be cool to do a home study again - it's been so long, and I've really missed working with rescue.

--------------------- Yo, ho, ho, ho, a Pirate's life for me! Last Sunday was "Talk Like a Pirate Day" and I had a ball embarrassing my daughter by talking like a pirate all day. Unbeknownst to her, I also ordered us pirate shirts. I'm wearing mine at this very moment. Manda is highly embarrassed by her shirt. heh. heh. heh.

So, that's all that's happening here. Still in pain, although the accupuncture which seems to be helping some.

Kathy -

Enjoyed the stories, esp. the new word.

My BIL uses accupuncture for his chemo side affects and has said that the positive results increased with each treatment, so stay with it and if your pin-pusher is also a traditional Chinese doctor, ask about moxibustion and other herbal treatments.

Sending you bug hugs... B.

*L* why did you think Sophie wouldn't like strawberries?

Virgil picks strawberries in my parents' yard. It is really cute... he doesn't bite them off but gently picks them with his lips, so the little white part stays on the plant.

He (and Lily when she was alive) also loves spicy foods. We once saw a Nova special talking about food (I think. Can't remember the show, just the intro). In the intro a guy was in a bar in Mexico with his dog. He explained that humans were the only creatures stupid enough to eat hot peppers, and gave a visual of his dog refusing a hot pepper. Virgil and Lily love hot peppers and also liked to eat the hot, hot sauces that came with Indian food in little plastic containers, which we wouldn't touch.

The most unrealistic thing I have ever read is in "The Boxcar Children", where the children don't share their cheese with the dog because, sadly, dogs don't like cheese. HUH???

I suspect that the Boxcar Childen had a dead dog or possibly a cat (cats never eat what you want them to. They only like what you're eating at that very moment.) My first cat used to habitually climb into bags of Frito Corn Chips and mow out.

I have never met a dog that didn't like cheese, peanut butter, ice cream or popcorn. Maybe the Boxcar children were selfish little beasts who wanted to keep the cheddar for themselves.

Dogs love cheese, peanut butter and almost all foods except for citrus. All dogs hate Listerine Breath Strips (don't ask how we know, but it is a good thing that Sophie isn't vicious) Idiot dogs (ones who need special needs training) like to walk around with a grape in their mouths for hours and eventually drop the grape into the water dish. The grapes get squishy after a while, and need to be fished about the water.

My dog would not eat

the pickles out of a hamburger.... strawberries bananas

Everything else was "fair game" especially if the kids dropped it (Or didn't hold it high enough to avoid being grabbed by the greedy dachshund).

He would eat raw potato, zuchinni, and green beans even..... His favorite food was - -ICE CREAM!!!!

He even liked blueberries -- my mother thought this was funny - and gave him a bunch of blueberries one day -- because he kept eating them.

I do NOT need to explain what happened after that.... do I?

Heeeheee! I had a white poodle who loved spaghetti & meatballs. Had an orange muzzle every time my Mom gave him leftovers. Nutcase loved peanut butter, too, which was FUNNY to watch him eat.

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from snipped-for-privacy@aol.combeads (Cheryl) :

my mom always fixed an ice cream cone for the dog when she made one for us. [visualize an ENGLISH BULLDOG demanding HIS ice cream cone, too] and he loved watermelon and popcorn. and he always had a present under the tree at Christmas - wrapped - that he would find, root out, and open.

about the ONLY thing he wouldn't eat [and neither would Cody] was lettuce.

my oldest would suck the sauce off of the spaghetti and then drop the noodles on the floor from her high chair - right onto the head of a waiting dog. the dogs LOVED that high chair.

Lol. I don't think I've ever had a dog that at strawberries!

And very cool for Manda! How exciting to go on such a trip!

Roxy loves grapes. She will sit and beg if I am eating them.

The kids are playing and Nathan says he is a hunter looking for dragons. I told him dragons don't taste good, and he replied he just wants one for decoration. lol Cheri (Bubbee to Emily and Nathan)

ditto here - we even took Baron to the Dairy Queen with us - and would buy him the kiddie cup -- I would hold it between the toes of my shoes so he could lick it... LOL

Doesn't everyone???? Baron had his own STOCKING on the fireplace.... LOL

Me neither, and I worked in vet hospitals and the SPCA. I met thousands of dogs (and I grab every dog I see on the street, within reason). They've all told me this, every single last one of them. Cheese, peanut butter, ice cream, and popcorn. They whispered it in my ear. ~~ Sooz To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. ~~Joseph Chilton Pearce

If he doesn't have it already, he would love "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch. One of the best kids' books we ever read. Features a really fun (and not scary at all) dragon.

After Manda and I went to do our home visit for Cairn rescue, a Cairn Terrier I know (the one who lives here) whispered in my ear that there is a place within a couple of hundred yards of here that stocks CocoaCats.

Of course, Manda and I hopped in the truck and headed right over there, and guess what? CocoaCats a plenty! We purchased some for Sooz (we need your snail mail address), and if anyone else wants them, just shout. Manda got some Peeps Ghosts to explode in the microwave.

*sniff* Mucha (Parakeet) loved spaghetti. He would have an orange little face for a long time after we had that.

Hey, you guys, recent evidence is that grapes aren't good for dogs. I think small amounts are ok but watch it.

My beloved labrador, Roger Ramjet, would have eaten that whole selection as a single treat.

He could beg eloquently for a grilled cheese sandwich simply by looking at me with his big brown eyes. He's much missed although he's been gone for over 30 years.

I must admit I want to try a cocoacat. I may change my mind about Peeps after I try one. I've looked everywhere here and nada.
