Bits and Pieces (lots of little stories)

Mr.Kitty liked Nacho Cheese Doritos with guacamole. He'd swat them right out of your hand before it got to your mouth. I miss my old friend...

And...for those of you who can stand another sweet kid story...

My dd was in preschool, and had a friendship with a little boy, Graham. His dad is an author (wrote a GREAT book, lemme know if you're interested), and his mom is a teacher. He was invited to dd's 5th bday party, and arrived with that book as his gift to her. The inscription from the family was "To Alissa...Little Girls can Kick Butt Too!"...

and we love that story, SO much, and always think so fondly of Graham, my dd's first little "crush"!!!

No problemo. I have your address, so Cocoacats will be on their way. I'll give you fair warning: I like stale Peeps, but you can keep the CocoaCats(bats - whatever). They definitely aren't my favorite. Now if you could get Milka chocolate, that's another story altogether.

I liked stale Peeps too when I could eat sweets. I may have to eat the head one day and the body the next. Trinkett will probably get a bite or two since she loves anything candy like.

Oh yeah - he was the funniest bird that ever lived. I don't like birds (understatement of the year), but Mucha could always make me laugh.

He used to tell everyone that he was a "Pretty Beurdie" and would eat of Marisa's plate. I'm sure I'm not the only one that misses him.

Yes, Mucha was very pretty! And smart, too.

Speaking of birdies...the link below is a photo of our Beavis. (Sorry it's a little blurry.) She's working on two of her "Five a Day" (broccoli and carrot).

My cats must want Doritos too. I haven't had any in a long time, but have a bag now. When I try to eat them they are all over me, the bag, etc. Silly kitties!

Thanks for remembering him, Kathy.

Last night was a hard one again for us. I remembered Mucha at the memorial service (around 4:30 inbetween various other Yom Kippur afternoon and evening services). I said the blessing for him that you would say for a son that passed away (religious ppl would probably be horrified. But it seemed right to me. Especially as that one remembers "your sweet memory" and then promises to do things in his honour... I guess rescuing Lila and Sugar was in his honour).

I felt a little clearer about him after that.

But then late last night I was hung with guilt pains again, and of course when I talked about it DH felt bad too.

poor little Mucha...

We just now realized (after seeing Lila and Sugar interacting wtih eachother) that the buzzing noises he was making the last few months were little "I love you" kind of noises. (DH liked to call them "fart noises" and we had thought they were just a fun new sound effect at the time).

I'm not religious, but I try to live a spiritual life, and that sounds right to me too. I know people put animals and people on a different scale but I love animals and they bring so much joy into my life, how can that not be a "God thing" and worthy of inclusion in one's religious prayer ritual?

I agree!

the buzzing noises he was making the last few months

I think i's funny/cute that "I love you" in parakeet sounds like "farty noises". Don't forget, you didn't have a dictionary or anything for translation.

My cat Minion looooved potato chips. BBQ flavor was her favorite, though she'd eat anything..salt and vinegar, sour cream and onion, dill pickle..she'd go nuts if someone had a bag of chips. If you didn't give her one, and didn't pay attention to your bag, she'd stick her whole head into the bag and go fishing for chips.

I also had a cat who loved those cubes of kraft caramel. I never gave him a whole cube to eat..I'd pinch off little bits of caramel and warm them up in my hands before giving it to him. He had a sweet tooth in general though. He'd sample all kinds of candy if he could get ahold of it.

Also had a cat that would drink fruit juice and soda..mainly pepsi and coke. She started this habit when she was a kitten, so she ended up being named Pepsi..which was appropriate, as she was a brindled cat the color of soda.

I read an article recently in an animal magazine that said grapes can be deadly for dogs (I'm assuming Roxy is a dog). They don't do visible damage instantly..it's a slow internal thing that can eventually kill them.

But who knows..my parents had a dog that once ate two dozen chocolate rum balls and died of nothing more than old age..another one of their dogs has an iron cast stomach, apparently, because she's wolfed down her share of candy bars and chocolate cookies that she stole from the pantry.

Ha..I remember those books. I read most of them when I was a kid.

The cheese thing is terribly unrealistic. Every dog I've ever known has adored cheese. We used to have a beagle who refused to take pills unless they were stuffed into cubes of cheese first. Anything else he'd spit right out.

Buckie, my very long lived Cairn Terrier (predecessor to Sophie) once stole a large bowl of snack sized Three Musketeers bars (including wrappers) that I had sitting out for the trick or treaters. Panicked, because Buckie was a rather small dog (maybe 15 lbs), and there were quite a few candy bars in there (a couple of bags), I called the vet.

Apparently most American chocolate (the cheap stuff, like Three Musketeer bars) has very little theobromine (the bad stuff in chocolate) in it. Buckie gaffed all over my mother's carpet, which was probably much worse for his health than the little candy bars he ate. (chocolate chips and baking chocolate are a totally different story)

Yes, it was about a half hour before I was expecting trick or treaters, and I had no time to go buy more candy. I grabbed a roll of quarters, and gave the kids money instead. They were really, really happy - much more so than they would have been with the Three Musketeer bars.

I don't remember any of the kids' adventures very well, but I vividly remember that cheese remark.

Virgil (my mom's Shetland Sheepdog and therefore my little brother) has taken all of his pills without cheese or penut-butter since Lily (now deceased) came to be Foster Dog. Lily, otherwise known as Pilly, recieved a variety of remedies for her various little maledies. Virgil of course became insanely jealous and demanded to have pills too (as he got older he actually needed some. Until then everybody just got vitamins).

Virgil even got jealous when Pilly had to have eye-drops. After he but in a million times my mom got some saline solution to give him. He would sit in the most pathetic way possible, his mouth a straight line and his ears back in misery, waiting for his eye drops. We didn't care if he flinched and they missed as he didn't actually need them (unlike poor Pill-Pal, who at one time had to have gooky eye ointment smeared right onto her eye).

Virgil recently started taking some homeopathic medications whcih came in a dropper. I got to administer them for the first week because my mom had just had heart surgery and wasn't allowed to bend over. When he saw the dropper he immediately scrunched up against my leg and tilted his head back, making the most miserable face immaginable. It took a while to convince him the drops had to go in his mouth, not his eyes. Actually, it might've been easier to put them in his eyes... he would scrunch up his mouth. Luckily doggie teeth aren't very even and I figured out how to jam the tip of the dropper inbetween his teeth :).

One final story:

When Virgil came over to visit for a few days he suddenly wouldn't take his morning pill from me, only from DH. Since he has always been so good about this since the Lily-inspired jealousy, I couldn't figure out why he wouldn't take it. My mom pointed out my great folly: I didn't follow the SCHEDULE. OH MAN! I should give him is pill BEFORE his breakfast, or it is just WAY too confusing!!!

(His alternative doctor, who administers his accupuncture and homeopathic medication, claims that he is of a "metal" type and therefore is very schedule oriented. He also takes a while to warm up to new people, and hates hot weather.)
