A little of this and that....

well, I can tell you about the dryness of Arizona. It gets hot and dry for most of the summer. But Phoenix has the lowest number of days of precipitation of any major city (According to the weather person, Las Vegas averages one more day than we do....) After all we are "The Valley of the Sun"! Right now it is dry, but there have been some flood warnings off and on for the last couple of weeks. Right now we have a cold front coming through. The other night we had windstorms, several large trees down and so forth. One thing about the desert.... most of our "rivers" are actually riverbeds, until there is spring/summer rain and snowmelt run off. As a kid, when we traveled it was always a thrill to driver over a river that actually had water in it.... and did "all" the time. Unheard of for us.

We do get floods on occasion. But usually because of all then asphalt and not great storm drains. And flash floods in the washes/rivers. But you generally get plenty of warning for them.

It is definitely dry. We generally don't have to worry too much about mildew and such. But we pay in other ways. There are trade offs with everything.

Humidity here today in my part of the desert is 9%. Average rainfall according to the city is under 4". Flooding generally flash flooding and is short lived. We might get a bit of snow here but generally not much to speak of. I can get to the beach in a bit over an hour, skiing in less than an hour and Vegas in 3- 1/2 hours and San Diego in a bit over 2 hours. Expect lots of nosebleeds and split fingers though. WInd is generally the bad thing about the weather here. DD has been house shopping. There are a LOT of vacant houses available here these days. Taria

Hi Rhoda,

During the summer, our humidity is usually in the single digits; in the winter in the teens and twenties, except for the relatively rare times we have rain. We average about 4" per year. Very few plants grow in the wild here except the hardiest that can endure the time in between rains. Since we get below freezing in the winter, there aren't many native cacti like in Arizona, although transplants seem to survive well enough.

Um yes, it's quite dry. :-)

Best regards, Michelle in NV

Sounds like while you're losing family you're also regaining family as well. Perhaps a balancing of sorts. Sounds like the SoL party went just fine!! You sound like you're healing just fine. I'm proud of you.

Love always, Dreamweaver - where in Minnesota were you?

Dreamweaver, I've just recently discovered facebook myself.....okay, so my sister pointed it out and then my step-mom is also on there! Then I recently talked with my middle son (who lives in MA with his dad) and he's on there! Now, how cool is that!!! Anyhow, since I've been on I've also been connected with relatives (on my dad's side.)

Okay, I have been busy....very busy! First my grandma was in the hospital for an obstructive bowel and they didn't think she'd make it...she did and now she's miserable in the nursing home. Then as she was being taken back to the nursing home I get a phone call from my dad...he doesn't think he has much time left and wants us home. (He has terminal lung cancer and we are just waiting for his passing.) The good news is that not only did I make it home (Minnesota), but my two sisters also flew in from different parts of the country and we were able to spend time together with my dad while he was still coherent. In both cases, I wish God would just hurry up and take them. During this whole process I was able to reconnect and resolve issues with my mom and one of my sisters.

Since I've returned home to Oregon I have been busy this week getting ready for my late DH's Spirit of Life party....it's on the 28th in the afternoon. I'm not really comfortable with throwing such a big bash, my anxiety level is through the roof...I just keep focusing on the fact that the people coming are family and friends.

I haven't done any sewing/quilting lately, but plan on working on my mariner's compass table topper for my in-laws....there how's that for being on topic! lol
