A question on Sesame St and the Muppets

Perhaps our children had advanced to cleaning carburetors and applying mascara when Sesame Street first appeared. Somehow, my education is dismally blank on the characters. I am appliquéing a 'Burt' and notice that he seems to always appear with a gray bird named Bernice. . . . and Bernice is holding a paper clip with her beak. Could one of you please go consult with a 4 year-old and ask if Burt would be lonely without Bernice? Of course, I want this little crib quilt to be technically and historically correct, oh my mercy yes. There are some beautiful birds here in my stash of 'good for appliqués' and I was thinking I would just use one of them - but, first I need the advice of an authority. Does anyone here speak 'Muppet' ? Polly

If it helps... Bernice is Bert's pet pigeon ;-) lol... and I'm told the fact that it is a pigeon is important... but it's ok if you have Bert without the Bernice, but not ok to sub out say a parrot or a cardinal.... other's mileage may vary ;-) Isn't it funny what is important... on the online area of SS, there are pigeon pattern games etc, so DD is very aware of what kind of bird it is......

Honestly Polly, I'm surprised he isn't with Ernie! While I've never actually "met" the character of Bernice, she is probably one of his pigeons and Burt is fanatical about taking care of and feeding the pigeons (watched SS into the older elem. grades and am guilty of leaving an episode on if I come across it now and then, but wouldn't consider myself "an authority")

That would be one of Burt's pidgeons. While he loves his pidgeons, and his paperclips (as well as oatmeal and lightbulbs and bottlecaps), he is not dependant on any of these. He might be lonely without Ernie, tho. :-)

Don't really speak 'Muppet', but I grew up on Sesame Street and have 5 and 2 year old kids. If it were me, I would leave Bernice off the quilt. To me it would seam odd to have her on it in a way. When you see him various places (i.e. my friends little boys room decor, baby clothing and accessories in the stores etc.) he is always shown without her. The only place I've seen her is on the show and that is not that much. From what I remember, and have seen when the kids watch it, he talks about her more than you see him actually with her. JMHO but HTH.

How I would love to hug you all. Thank you so much. I found a great buy of

29 Little Golden Books for our family's 2 year-old and the immediate favorite was Burt. How I would hate for her to discover Great Aunt Polly was a dimwit; well this soon anyway. I appreciate your help so much. Polly

Polly, when she sees the quilt that her dear great aunt Polly made for her she will know that you are no dimwit. (I didn't even know that Burt had a "Bernice". Of course, haven't seen SS for many years.) Marlys in Indiana

Of course, I know absolutely nothing about the question, but the question and answers have really made me smile broadly - nothing better! Thanks all. . In message , polly esther writes

I was a toddler when Sesame Street made its appearance.

It along with Mr Rogers was watched every day by me.

Characters have changed quite a bit since then, though, so my knowledge is likely out of date.

Bert always went with Ernie when I was watching. I don't recall a Bernice.

Big Bird used to be the only one who could see Sunffalufagus, but apparently now everyone can see him.

Oscar the Grouch was mean to everyone.

Cookie Monster when crazy over cookies - but no doubt promotes healthy snacks now :-)

Elmo didn't exist back then.

Sesame Street is so great! As a child we learned English watching it. So I always have fond memories of it. But my favorite character came along way after I should have stopped watching it! ELMO!! Elmo is totally cool! I have to resist buying one of those giggling Elmo dolls. If it were up to me I'd have one in every language! ;o)

So, now to Bert: I'd definately leave Bernice off the quilt, if she's not working for you. If you plan on writting Bert's name on the quilt, remember to spell it with an "e" not a "u".... Didn't I just learn my English well? ;o)

I was a young mother when SS came along!

Same here, but I have a SS book of patterns for a quilt, and I suspect that's the same one Polly is using. It has Bert with Bernice, and Bernice was new to me, too, when I first saw it. I've only used the book once, and that was to make an Ernie placemat for DGS#1 when his little brother was born.

But Elmo is *so* cute!

Bert is usually shown with Ernie but he loves pigeons and Bernice is his favorite (maybe his pet?) and he collects paperclips and i vaguely remember a sock fettish too. So my opinion, he can be w/o the pigeon but if he's with a bird, it should be Bernice :) If he is with another muppet it would be Ernie.

Bert just gets cuter by the minute. I went to my shop behind the bird orchard (other people have fruit orchards but ours is strictly for the birds, no piece of fruit has survived to become people food) to my stash of important but seldom needed stuff. If anyone gets the urge to applique Bert, I'll be happy to share my fur collection. Bert has heavy but closely-clipped eyebrows and rather long wild spiked hair. Two different fur piles are required but would be easy enough to mail. Can't you just see the mail carrier's face if a strip of Bert eyebrows peeked through a squishie envelope? Polly

Uh!!!!Ladies!!!!!!!Gentlemen!!!!!!!!! Some of us are slightly more mature in our years. These shows were what my daughter watched when she was growing up. Now, give me Captian Kangroo, Romper Room, The Bullwinkle Show (loved Natasha), etc. and we're talking great TV. Tom and Jerry were favorites too. Now I here that those cartoons are banned as too violent. I don't know that it hurt us too much. At least no one I knew became an axe murder because of Tom & Jerry. You want violence, just watch the news.

Michele------- fading to see if I can find some good Tom & Jerry cartoons to watch because they make me laugh.

I used to watch those too. Although I was quite disappointed in Romper Room - I didn't have the bouncy ball, nor the ball you sat on and bounced so I couldn't play along. Also at the end when the lady would hold up the magic mirror and say...

Romper, bompe,r stomper, boo Tell me, tell me, please tell me, do Magic Mirror tell me today How are all my friends at work and play?

I see....blah blah blah...she would name names of her friends.

She never said Marcella :-)
